Phase 2 Writing words (x4 sets) Practise ALL sounds

What’s included? x20 landscape orientation pdf sheets for all Phase 2 phonics sounds. There are x4 sets, each with x3 sheets with x6/x5 cards to cut out plus an answer sheet for every set. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for Early Years children, pupils in Year 1 who are just learning these sounds for the first time or who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? An adult cuts along the dotted lines and places the set of x6 word cards on a table top. Learners look at the image on the left, then sound it out and write this word on the lines (on the right). A visual answer sheet is included which learners can use themselves to encourage autonomy. Resource Details… This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has been designed practise sounding out and writing simple words using only sounds in Phase 2. The idea is to introduce the sets in order as the new sounds are introduced to learners. Red Set 1 Includes words which all contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n s - stamp a - ant t - tap p - pan i - ink n - nest (contains ‘e’ - introduced in set 3) Orange Set 2 Includes words which contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k m, d, g, o, c, k m - map d - dog g - gift (contains ‘f’ ‘ introduced later, with set 4) o - octagon (although this is a longer word it can be sounded out using sounds from sets 1 and 2. IF learners know this 2D shape. In addition, the ‘a’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’, learners may need help with this) c - cat k - kit (e.g. football/PE kit) Yellow Set 3 Includes words which all contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, b, r, u, h ck, e, b, r, u, h ck - duck (first ‘end’ sound here so may catch out some learners) e - egg (double ‘gg’ may be an issue though of course the ‘g’ letters together only have one ‘g’ sound) u - up (escalator - arrow indicates this) r - rat (not to be confused with ‘mouse’ !) h - hen (not to be confused with ‘chicken’ !) b - bag Green Set 4 Includes words which contain all the sounds in Phase 2. f - frog ff - daffodil (‘middle’ sound may catch out some learners) Learners will need to know this particular flower or may just associate this image with ‘flower’ (for ‘f’. What’s included? x6 sheets (activities and answers) for Phase 2 Set 1 (letters - s a t p i n). Landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce the first six sounds in Phase 2 - s a t p i n. Learners match pictures and sounds (as puzzles) to complete images and make a simple words to read. Learners can then use these completed puzzles to fill out missing words in sentences (either separate sentences or all sentences on one sheet) to complete, then read whole (simple) sentences. All words on the ‘picture puzzles’ only use the sounds ‘s a t p i n’. Phase 2, set 2 (sounds m d g o c k) is also available (in same design) in my TES shop if you like this one. How to use it? Picture/word puzzles Pages 1 and 2 An adult cuts out the x9 puzzle shapes following dotted lines. The segments of all x9 ‘picture/word puzzles’ can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to match. Once the segments of each picture/word puzzle are completed each of the x9 words can be read. The completed ‘picture puzzles’ can be used as a reference to complete the missing words for x9 sentences (pages 3-5). Writing words/reading sentences Pages 3-6 There are two versions of the same x9 sentences to complete, each has a missing word with a clear space for each of the missing letters (graphemes) to be written. A larger format version of the sentences set out individually (pages 3 and 4) which can be cut up (perhaps laminated) and written on (if laminated - with a dry wipe/wipe clean pen). The smaller scale version (page 5) has the same x9 sentences but all on one page for learners to complete with a pencil, as a ‘worksheet’. Answers are included on page 6 in the same format which learners can use for quick, easy reference. *Resource Details… Pages 3-6 The sentences include high frequency words ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘is’, you’, ’we’, ‘can’. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce the first six sounds in Phase 2 - s a t p i n AND m d g o c k. Learners sound out the words on the ‘word cards’ and match these to the images on the ‘picture cards’. Answers are clearly presented on pages 3 and 4 for quick easy reference - encouraging learners to be autonomous. This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set (2) has been designed to be a simple, predictable matching activity to promote independence and consolidate knowledge of the first set of letters/sounds introduced. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or for an adult to use to support learners needing some extra help/to revisit these sounds. Phase 2, set 1 (sounds s a t p i n) is also available (in same design) in my TES shop if you like this one. How to use it? The adult can pre-cut the x16 rectangular shaped picture cards (x8) and word cards (x8) (pages 1 and 2). Grey dotted lines guide where to cut. These x16 cards can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to read and match. Resource Details… The words on the word cards only use the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k (from sets 1 AND 2) These words are: dog map pig cap pot mat pod cogs Learners may find ‘pod’, ‘cogs’ and ‘mat’ more tricky to match as these three words are not as obvious/may be ‘new’ concepts to learners, encouraging learners to think a bit more about the meaning of the words on the cards. E.g. some learners may not know that a ‘pea’ grows inside of a ‘pod’. Learners may not know/be familiar with ‘cogs’ (or know they are called) and learners may confuse ‘cat’ with ‘mat’. I have included an orange arrow pointing to the ‘mat’ to help make this clearer. This CVC phonics/reading practise activity set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. How to use it? An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted guide lines make where to cut clear). The set of cards can be placed on a carpet/table top. Learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then match this to the picture from this set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words. Resource Details… The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phases 2 and 3 but mainly Phase 2. As said, these CVC cards have been designed to be printed double-sided on card to use with the ‘Function Machine’ (~instructions of how to make one of these included) to practise sounding out simple CVC (Phase 2 phonics) words - learners read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below. This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently. How to use it? An adult needs to print these card (double-sided) onto card and and pre-cut the cards into x10 separate rectangle cards. What’s included? This download includes x2 sheets, both landscape orientation, pdf format to look at and read / sound out x20 number names from the ‘common word’ list. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a set of the common words and practise become familiar with seeing/reading these words on sight as well as matching these words with their images. This set includes x15 number names which can be sounded out and x5 ‘tricky’ number names (which can’t be sounded out). All words included have a matching image (of the numeral and correct number of objects). This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or those needing some individual 1:1 support. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for Early Years children/pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Year 2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners who need to revisit these tricky words/spelling as well as pupils with additional learning needs. How to use it? Learners cut out words along dotted lines provided and (ideally to avoid getting words in a muddle!) look at one word at a time to become familiar with it. Learners can focus on the black letters to attempt (in part) to sound each word out. Learners then match the word with the image - placing each word card on/in the box underneath the images. Word cards are to be secured with glue once learners are happy they have matched the words with the images. Instructions for how to use this resource are numbered as a list on the left side of this activity sheet. There is a clear space for learners to write their name (right) and the number date (top, right). Resource Details… Words have been organised depending on which phonics phase they fit in with. The 'title box’ (top-right)’ makes the colour coded system clear. Pink indicates that the words are from ‘phase 2’, purple indicates that the words are from 'phase 3’, turquoise indicates that the words are from 'phase 5’ and grey indicates that the words are from phase 6+. Red letters indicate the tricky letters e.g. the ‘o’ and ‘e’ in ‘one’ are both tricky (and both are red) as well as ‘irregular’ letters/sounds, e.g. the second ‘e’ in ‘seven’ which can be commonly pronounced as an ‘u’. Where individual letters are underlined - this indicates that together these (underlined) letters have one sound, e.g. ‘th’, ‘ir’ and ‘ee’ in ‘thirteen’. What’s included? This download includes x1 sheet, landscape orientation, pdf format to read/sound out words (nouns) in Phases 3, 5 and 6+ What’s it for? This activity has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a set of the first 200 high frequency words and practise reading these words by sounding them out. All words have been sorted into colour groups depending on which phonics phase they fit in with so words can be introduced at the right time for your learners. This set of words is ‘nouns’ - all words fit in with phonics Phases 3/5/6+. This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently, during ‘busy/quiet times’ or those needing some individual 1:1 support. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for Early Years children/pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Year 2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? Learners cut out words along dotted lines provided and (ideally to avoid getting words in a muddle!) look at one word at a time to ‘sound it out’. Learners then match the word with the image - placing each word card on/in the box underneath the images. Word cards are to be secured with glue once learners are happy they have matched the words with the images. Resource Details… These words are all from the list of ‘first 200 high frequency words’ to read and spell. It is possible to ‘sound out’ these words. Where individual letters are underlined - this indicates that together these (underlined) letters have one sound, e.g. ‘ow’ in ‘town’. This is also indicated on the ‘key’ included on the sheet itself (right side). Any ‘tricky’/‘irregular’ letters are identified in red, such as ‘e’ in ‘garden’ which tends to be pronounced as an ‘u’. To fit in with other resources available in my TES shop - the colour indicates which phonics phase these words fit in with. Purple indicates that the words are from 'phase 3’, turquoise indicates that the words are from 'phase 5’ and grey indicates that the words are from phase 6+. The ‘title’ (top, left) can be used as a visual reference to keep this colour coded system clear. What’s included? What is it?! This download includes two A4, pdf sheet (portrait) to practise handwriting Phase 3 ‘tricky words’ - be, he, she, me, we, my, you, her, here, are, they, all, was. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource details This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each letter has a clear ‘starting dot’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin. The words have each been repeated three times (in three columns) left to right. There are clear, visual, instructions at the top of each sheet, in three parts (left to right). In the centre (at the top) the colour order to follow is clearly illustrated, guiding learners to begin with dark green, follow light green, pale yellow, mid yellow, orange and then red to ‘stop’. Not all letters have enough steps to follow through using all of these colours. This resource has been designed for learners to write one word at a time, gradually reducing the level of support provided (left to right). E.g. learners begin with the word on the left (in the first column) and once they have written this they move onto the same word, to the right (in the centre/column two). Lastly learners write the same word a third time on the right (column three). The first word (column one) has a green (‘go’) starting dot, coloured arrows around the outside of each letter to show the direction to move the pencil from the beginning to the end red (‘stop’) dot. The second word (column two) also includes a green starting (‘go’) dot and red (‘stop’) dot as well as one arrow per letter making clear the initial direction the pencil should move in. The third word (column three) includes a dark grey starting dot and light grey stop dot for each letter. Learners will need to use the knowledge they have learnt from writing each word twice before to complete writing ‘word three’ more independently. At the base of the sheet there is also a space to further practise writing each of these words twice and smaller (each positioned on a line). The words at the base of the sheet only have a grey starting dot to help learners. There is a clear space at the lowest edge of both sheets for learners to write their name and at the top of the sheets (right side) a space for the number date - helpful to keep track of progress if learners revisit this activity if needed. The font used in the coloured boxes is Sassoon Infant Std - size 65. The words at the base of the sheet are the same font but smaller - size 40. This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are just learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners with additional learning needs who need to revisit these sounds. How to use it? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce all of Phase 2 sounds - matching images with the corresponding sound (grapheme), then matching these to the whole word to sound out. Answers cards included in a clear format for learners to reference themselves, encouraging autonomy. Print resources onto card rather than paper, cut following dotted lines. Resource Details The Phase 2 sounds have been grouped into four groups to avoid learners becoming overwhelmed and making it easier tho target individual sound practise as necessary. This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are just learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners with additional learning needs who need to revisit these sounds. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce all of Phase 2 sounds - sounding out simple words (all only using sounds within Phase 2) then checking to see if they were correct, promoting autonomy. How to use it? Print resources onto card rather than paper, cut following dotted lines and place the ‘word cards’ on a table top with the last section folded backwards (where the ‘dashed lines’ indicate) to ‘hide’ the image behind the word. Learners sound out and read each word, then can check by looking behind at the hidden (folded back) image to see if they read the word correctly. With the end section folded back these cards can ‘stand up’ on a table top rather than being laid flat, giving them an interactive feel. What’s included? This download includes nine A4, portrait pdf sheets which make a number matching set featuring x54 cards which includes all letters of the alphabet with an image to match. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource is to practise identifying the initial sounds for x26 images and matching these to the written letter/sound (grapheme). Both upper and lowercase letters are including - helping to reinforce both. How to use this resource This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the square (cards) are already cut up (and hole punched!), shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on a ring. Learners look at each picture card and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the ‘picture’ card to the alphabet ‘letter’ card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (picture and letter cards together) learners can then order the card pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet or in reverse which can be much trickier! Pictures included are apple, banana, car, dog (Dachshund!), egg, frog, grass, house, ink, jam, key, lemon, milk, nine numbers, orange, pink pig, quarter, robot, sun, tree, upside-down umbrella, van, wall (not to be confused with ‘bricks’ !) xylophone, yellow yoyo, zebra. This alphabet matching set could be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to cross-check the correct orientation of individual letters if unsure when writing. Games This ‘Alphabet Match’ set could also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the picture cards or all the letter cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up. Suggestion Brightly coloured plastic keyrings (which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic) as seen on the main resource image are ideal for this resource and can be purchased online easily. Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small amount of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource. What’s included? This download includes x9 word searches (all portrait orientation, pdf) A4 sheets, featuring nine ‘Autumn themed’ word searches. Page 1 features the word search and the answers (included on page 2) clearly show where all words are hidden. Answers are displayed in the same layout (as page 1) to promote autonomy whilst providing easy comparison/quick reference. Autumn themed word searches included in this download are Autumn, September, Back to school, October, Harvest Festival, Halloween, November, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day. Each of these word searches are also available separately in my TES shop. Who’s it for? These word searches have been designed for pupils the early years, in years one and two, as well as students needing additional learning support. Resource layout The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. The November word search is x13 squares up/down x14 squares across and the ‘Harvest Festival’ word search is x10 squares up/down and x12 squares across. The hidden words have been organised into four groups of four, clearly showing all hidden question words below the word search. There are up to 22 words to find per worksheets. Words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards) and vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards and backwards). Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). What’s included? This download includes x3 A4 portrait pdf sheets. These include three dice to make, x2 ‘game cards’ and simple, clear instructions for how to play the game. Each player will need one game card (and a pencil!) There are two game cards included on page 3 - these can be printed/photocopied as many times as needed and the sheet cut in half to separate the two game cards (one per player). This game can be for one learner to play alone or for several learners to play together in a group (taking turns). The game instructions are included on pages 1 and 3 of the download - I will also include them here: How to play game Each player takes turns to roll the three dice together. Each player places the three dice next to each other, left to right - red, amber, green. Player sounds out the graphemes to read the word. If this is a ‘real’ word player writes it in the coloured boxes on their card (on the ‘left’ side). If this is a ‘nonsense’ word the player writes this word in the coloured boxes on their card (on the right side). Play passes to next player. If a player rolls the same combination as previously rolled they can have another turn. First player to roll (read and write!) x5 real OR nonsense words wins! There are various words which can be made using this combination of letters in the set order. Some ‘real word’ examples include sat/bat/hat/mat/pat/rat, pig/bill/hill/mill/pill, pull/bug/hug/mug/rug, sock/rock/hog, hen/men/pen/red/bell/sell. What’s included? This download includes three A4, portrait pdf sheet to practise reading and writing CVC words all made using letters within Phase 2. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The layout includes x2 wheels, one for the ‘front’ (wheel 1) and one for the back - with the x2 sets of vowels on (wheel 2). Once assembled (according to instructions included on the pdf) the ‘CVC Phonics Wheel’ can be turned to reveal one vowel in the centre of the two consonants displayed/written on the front of the wheel. The wheel can be turned clockwise or anticlockwise, the direction doesn’t matter. Some words will be ‘real’ e.g. den//hen/men/pen and some words will not be real (will be ‘nonsense’) words e.g. len/ren. Real/nonsense words made can be written on page 3. There is space for x10 real and x10 nonsense words to be written here and a clear space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet). Suggestion For older, more able learners this activity could be linked to looking up new words in the dictionary to find out if they are/are not real words and if they are ‘real’ words e.g. ‘fen’ find out what their meanings are (Fen is used to refer to an area of low, flat, wet land, especially in the east of England) - so now you know!
