Lesson 3: Fertilisation and implantation
Students will revisit the main part and functions of the female reproductive system. Understand the journey the egg and sperm take and how a zygote is formed. Students will also look at the size of the sperm cell to the egg and see how these cells are adapted to their function.
Worksheets to consolidate their learning.

Lesson 2: Reproductive systems
Lesson:
Identifies the key parts of the male and female reproductive systems and the functions. A worksheet with answers to consolidate their learning and two summative plenaries to choose from

It address key terms adolescence and puberty, discuss the differences between the two concepts, gives examples.
Worksheet, cardsort material and discussion opportunity at the end of the slide show.
This is an excellent assessment resource that my department used for internal examination with our Year 13’s - It was their December mock examination.
I created all three papers using past examination papers dating back to the 2006 specification. My reasoning for creating these assessments from old material a) my students had completed all the current AQA papers and the majority had completed the specification before this. The 2006 - 2011 spec. questions posed a new challenge for my students even the meticulous students.
**Student feedback: **
My meticulous students were so thankful for these questions as it really challenged them especially the Paper 3. My weaker ability students found it very challenging but it served as a great indicator for students needing further intervention support.
*The resources: *
A Powerpoint with the paper 1, 2 and 3 mark scheme; on slides 2, 20 and 38 you will see the papers question breakdown. I printed these for my students and got they to record their marks per question. At the end of the marking students analysed areas of strength and weakness.
Paper 1 - students need to have studied Chapters 1 - 10 to answer these 7 questions - time allowed 55mins
Paper 2 - students need to have studied Chapter 11 - 21 to answer these 6 questions - time allowed 55mins
Paper 3 - students need to have completed core practicals, completed past exam questions on practicals to complete this paper - time allowed 55 mins
Biology B1 Revision
In our department we would consider the points on these knowledge documents as the fundamentals on what students NEED to know for this topic.
It does involve a lot of rotate learning from the pupil; but they can be creative in how they revise with this information. Teachers can then follow up with recall and application questions. These documents are a great success with our students.
Hope they help your students.
Follows the OCR Gateway Science specification
Questions on
B1 - Cell level systems
B2 - Scaling up
B3 - Organism level systems
Includes mark schemes and helpful teacher comments for students to read prior to answering the questions
I cropped these questions from old OCR past exam papers and put them into the relevant module. I used these with my students when I had used all the current OCR questions. Students were thankful for the extra questions and that they were from OCR.
Hope they help your students.
Follows the OCR Gateway Science specification
*Suitable for *
Year groups 9 - 11
Combined students - triple content not included
This resource;
useful closer to examination times
I print three slides per page in a handout format; it is photocopied as a booklet for the students
I will spend a lesson going through key concepts relating to the topic, inform students on past exam questions relating to the topic. They annotate.
This lesson is very teacher lead but students love this type of lesson right before the exams.
OCR Gateway Science (Grade 9-1) Specification
Suitable for Year groups 9 - 11
It summaries the key concepts on all the B2 topics to include B2.1 Suppling the cell , B2.2 The challenge of size.
Triple/separate content not included. I usually get my students to add on this criteria
Practical detail also** not included**: see my GCSE practical summaries.
This revision resource:
Students must fill in keywords missing
It assess their understanding
Forms the backbone of their revision
Student have always found these posters helpful
GCSE Biology B1 - Cell Levels System revision follows the Gateway Science specification. This resourse is for Year 9 - 11 pupils.
It summaries the key concepts on all the B1 topics to include B1.1 Cell structure, B1.2 What happens in cells, B1.3 Respiration and B1.4 Photosynthesis.
Students must fill in the keywords that are missing on the ‘student version’ ppt. There is answers on the ‘answer’ ppt. that accompanies the student version and there is a help sheet, this displays the keywords for students.
Please note triple concepts are not included in these summaries (I usually get my triples to do up their own slide on the triple concept that is missing.) The dept of practical/experimental knowledge is also missing but please see me other resources on GCSE Biology practical summaries.
Students (especially the lower ability) find these revision sheets very helpful and they form the backbone of their revision.
This checklist is useful for Year 7 science students preparing for end of Year exams in science.
