Students complete a quiz as they enter. Depending on how they do, depends on which tasks they complete in the lesson. The idea is they work on their weakest area
Students are introduced to the different senses and what stimulus they detect. Students then plan and carry out an investigation looking at sensitivity. There is a planning sheet to help students, plus marking sheets should you wish to extend this project over a couple of lessons
Students arrive prior to the lesson have completed their pre reading
Students then complete a circus of activities.
You will need to get a copy of the Wellcome Trust Big Picture: Influenza to accompany this lesson
Starter - Looking at some questions addressing the previous lessons content
Main - Intro to content then a market place activity. All instructions and minimum requirements are included, you just need to provide the materials for them to find the information. Textbooks will have everything, but you could add websites too.
Plenary - Exam question with markscheme
Starts by introducing the difference between a conscious and a reflex response, students have several activities to complete on a worksheet (all answers are on the slides) and then finishing with how to answer a compare question, and then one for the students to complete.
There is also an optional points to prove task which could be set as pre-reading, homework, or cover.
Starter - Pupils exploring the blind spot
Main - Labelling of the eye, discussion of what happens to the pupil in light and dark, then exploring how it does that. Dissection of the eye.
Plenary - Levelled exam questions with markscheme
This is for a 100 minute lesson, but there are two tasks which could be split over two 50 min lessons.
The Timeline Poster is one activity and the Darwin text based activity is the second activity.
The text may be too textual for low ability or low reading age students, my low reading age group had an LSA and they were ACE!
Complete KS3 and KS4 fully differentiated lesson on Adaptation
Two versions of the lesson for the price of one.
One version is suitable for KS3, one version is suitable for KS4.
Starter
KS3
KS4 - BoB’s big five. A recap over the last few lessons in 5 questions that they complete in the back of their books (Hence BoB). There are then the answers on the next slides for students to self or peer mark. This is to encourage memory retention over a series of lessons and has had a great impact in my classroom. Followed by a series of images showing animals that have adapted to their surroundings.
Main
KS3 & KS4 - Place the station cards from the PPT file around the room. Students then have copies of the station cards from the word file and have to move around the room completing the cards. There are helper sheets to support students if needed, or for your LSA’s.
Helper sheets are for any LSA’s you may have
Plenary
KS3 & KS4 - Beach ball questioning. You need a beach ball. Throw to a student, ask a question, they then throw the ball to another student, who you then ask the next question to.
