To my fellow teachers! Welcome to my TES shop. I am a music/music technology specialist with a passion for curriculum within my subject. My aim with all my resources is to enthuse students within the subject but also set high expectations as to their outcomes. Each unit of work will contain a comprehensive SOW document, all lessons, worksheets, HW tasks, scores (if necessary), assessment criteria, extension material and progress radar (for students to fill out weekly). KS3 BANDLAB HOME LEARNING PROJECT

To help out a little, here is a free practical Music Tech SOW for Bandlab which can be set as home learning. I’m currently running this with my KS3 students. It’s aim is to give them a solid foundation of Music Technology - beginning with simple data entry all the way up to creating a mix. I’ve created tutorial videos for every aspect they need to get through in order to complete the track and these are designed for my students so apologies if I reference specifics to our school! Students find this helpful as they progress at their own pace and can pause/rewind things they aren’t entirely sure of. This takes about 6-8 lessons (1 Hr long). In this resource you will get - Supporting videos that talk through each activity that students can use whilst they complete the work. These are exceptionally useful and I have found that lower ability students really respond well to these, although they sometimes prefer I run the session live with them.

However, this looks at the other technical elements of sound, focusing on Foley, SFX, Synthesis etc. Students will recreate the sounds to accompany a horror clip and will learn about how to be creative with the DAW to further support and enhance the mood of the clip. This is a warm-up to the NCFE Music Technology Unit 4 - Sound Creation. This unit links nicely with ‘Music and Art’ (see year 7 resources) and ‘Film Music’ (see other Y8 resources). Students learn about programmatic music, perform an ensemble piece of music to tell the story of the LOTR (using themes from the film) and compose several short pieces to convey a story.

It’s primary aim is to get students playing with two hands and starting to think about how they can add expression into their pieces. Starts with more contemporary pieces then the assessment piece is them working towards a two handed performance of Bach - Prelude in C major.

This unit is highly practical and places the emphasis on students working towards a 64-bar performance within the blues style. They will also improvise using the blues scale. I have taught this unit for several years now and I’m always pleased with the outcomes and engagement of students.

I’ve included a screenshot to give you an idea This unit of work looks at really challenging students understanding of what constitutes art/music. They will attempt performances of ‘clapping music’, ‘tubular bells’ and ‘In C’ and develop a composition within the Terry Riley style. I’ve deliberately made this unit very practical and entered lots of points for discussion - including playing students the infamous 4 min 33 by John Cage. I’ve often been surprised at how engaged students are during this unit given the complexity of the themes but they enjoy the pieces they play - especially ‘Tubular Bells’. Enjoy!!

These resources give you three separate display areas. The aim of these displays is not only to visually look good but to actually be useful as a learning resource during teaching. The harmony display is simple yet highly effective - especially with the younger students who might not understand chords. The structure display is aimed specifically at the KS4 students. It provides them with a high level composition guide and ideas of variation to ensure they access the higher grades at GCSE.

**PLEASE NOTE: Only download this if you run ABLETON in your institution ** This unit looks at giving students a solid foundation of Music Technology - beginning with simple data entry all the way up to creating a mix. Students are given a template and their aim is to recreate a track so that it sounds as close as possible to the original. Unlike my other SOWs this is entirely student led in that I’ve created tutorial videos for every aspect they need to get through in order to complete the track. Students find this helpful as they progress at their own pace and can pause/rewind things they aren’t entirely sure of. There is also assessment criteria, HW, progress diary and radar and support guides. I’ve included screenshots of all the videos so you can see how much you are receiving with this resource. Musical material is all written by myself.

Zip File includes - Full SOW, Student worksheets, PowerPoints (6 lessons), Assessment material, scores, extension material This scheme is designed to simply get students playing three little birds by Bob Marley with the emphasis on them performing within the style. I have further included extension material if you wanted to include a bit of composition as a way of further challenging students. I find however, that even though the parts aren’t complicated, students often find the offbeat rhythmic element of Reggae challenging and so simply getting them to create an ensemble performance of the Bob Marley tune takes long enough. Lots of scope for expanding this to other instruments if you have the facilities/options. I’ve included a screenshot of the ZIP file so you can see what you are getting and included a few examples of the worksheets etc. PLEASE NOTE: I haven’t included the MP3s needed for the listening activities due to copyright so you’ll have to get a youtube link up for that.

ZIP FILE - Includes full SOW (7 lessons), PowerPoints, Student worksheets, assessment material, feedback stickers (10 sticker template on a4labels). This SOW introduces students to the concept of film music and specifically how they need to shape their music to suit the mood/emotion of the visual. I advice that you run the assessment part of this unit on ICT and load the trailer into a garageband file (or whatever DAW you have access to). The outcomes from the students tend to be higher quality. However, I have run this with students performing on live instruments and it has been still very successful. I’ve included screenshots of the ZIP file and worksheets, PowerPoints etc. **PLEASE NOTE: I haven’t included the videos that are required for the lessons due to copyright but I’ve put a list of youtube links for the required videos in a word document.

This unit aims to give students an understanding of rhythmic notation and having taught it for several years I’ve found the content allows students to really grasp basic music notation. It’s designed to be taught before the KEYBOARD UNIT which develops the notation onto TREBLE and BASS CLEF. Full SOW, PowerPoints, Worksheets, assessment material, paperwork for extracurricular trip to TATE BRITAIN and HW activities. This is a cross-curricular SOW that looks at promoting students to consider links between the two art subjects. They will improvise/compose music to try and convey the meaning/atmosphere of various artwork. The aim is for students to consider artists intent and then their ability to try and manipulate the elements to create a composition to support it. It’s nice to try and organise a visit to the TATE BRITAIN during week 3 of the scheme and from this students select a painting and compose to this. The final assessment is a performance much like Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ with the entire class performing as if the listener was walking through an exhibition of their chosen artwork. I’ve attached a screenshot of the ZIP file contents for you see what comes with it.

Full SOW, worksheets for students, assessment materials, homework and extension activities. This scheme aims to introduce students to the keyboard and also written notation - treble and bass clef. This unit should be preceded by some sort of rhythmic notation unit so that students already have a grounding in note values etc (See Y7 rhythm unit). The end result is a paired performance of MAD WORLD (this can be solo of course depending on the ability of the students). ZIP File contains all material and I’ve included a screenshot for you to see it’s contents.

Full SOW, Worksheets, Scores/arrangements, Lessons (6 PPT), HW Tasks. This SOW builds up to an ambitious samba drumming performance as a class/small groups. I’ve taught this unit many times and have found it extremely engaging for students. This has been recently updated for changes in OFSTED framework. I hope you enjoy delivering this as much as I do! I’ve added a screenshot of the contents of the ZIP file so you get a better idea of what comes with this.
