In this activity, children must help a Peruvian family - The Garcia’s travel to Saransk for Peru’s first game. Their job is to find the cheapest possible route. they have four possible flight options, various hotels and ways of getting to the game. Students will work in small groups and use their mathematical knowledge (number, fractions, percentages, problem solving, division, ratio etc) to find the best option for the Garcia’s. I used this in my Year 5 class and they LOVED IT! This resource comes complete with all the props (airplane tickets, hotel list etc), teacher instructions explaining the activity and a PowerPoint which shows children the correct method and mathmatically explains it. This is a test I created which will provide information in your children's progress in these upper KS2 targets: 1. Identifying and using the passive voice 2. Modal verbs 3. Identifying and using relative clauses 4. Using apostrophes for possession and contractions 5. Using commas for various reasons 6. Using hyphens for compound adjectives 7. Using semicolons and extending sentences with semicolons and related main clauses. The test is out of 32 and is aimed to diagnose errors to aid future learning whilst also evidencing and checking children's current understanding. The test comes with a marking scheme. This is seven lessons worth of work. Each lesson is directly related to the national curriculum’s objectives for the Year 5 unit of materials. The unit comes complete with an end-of-unit quiz (including mark scheme) to test the children’s understanding. I designed all the lessons myself to include: Cross-curricular writing (2 built-in extended writing opportunities) Maths (Venn diagrams, line graphs and reference to volume) Scientific work (nearly every lesson involves an experiment / activity) Scientific vocabulary, including references to variables, particularly controls for fair testing. I decided to add this resource as it worked extremely well with my class, the children enjoyed it and it allowed me to evidence and teach so much of the curriculum as you can see above. All lesson plans, presentations and resources are included. PLEASE NOTE - A lot of these lessons require extra-resources which your school most likely already have such as graph paper, and stop watches, scientific paper etc. Some lessons do require the teacher to buy resources (all of which will be cheap) such as Rice Krispies and chocolate (a lesson on reversible changes) and others. Here are two worksheets (differentiated by complexity) which require children to work with negative numbers. Firstly they must add the missing numbers to the pattern. Then they have some addition and subtractions which require the use of negative numbers. Finally, they apply their knowledge to answer word problems. Enjoy! This is a challenging activity where children must use their problem solving and reasoning skills to solve perimeter, area and volume questions. It worked exceptionally well with my Y5 class and the horse racing theme really inspired the children! This activity works best over a whole lesson and I like to put the children into mixed ability groups. Some of the questions are quite challenging (although it doesn’t deviate from the national curriculum in anyway) which makes it ideal for Y5 and 6 children; it could also be used in a lower KS3 setting as a fun way to recap on perimeter, area and volume. This pack includes the activity, a question sheet and a powerpoint which not only gives the correct answers but explains each step visually for the children - this makes it ideal for the children to self-assess and provide on-the-spot feedback to the whole class once the activity has been completed. I have based this on the NFER style exam papers so it includes one , two and three mark questions. It’s fantastic for developing the children’s various comprehension skills. The resource is given in an exam style format, or a more paper-saving textbook version! Finally, it comes with a mark scheme. This resource contains a PowerPoint which fully explains how to work out differences in time for 24 hour clocks. It uses a scaffolded approach starting from comparing times within the same hour to comparing times differences between hours. It contains a relevant basic skills starter session (missing number problems and using the inverse operation to solve these), two worksheets and a differentiated group activity linked to my mathematical villain, Dr Doom! This worked really well with my class and produced some super work. The children found the final activity particularly fun and the feedback they gave me was extremely positive!
