This differentiated ‘Baking with Fractions’ resource was used in Year 5 to support the learning of White Rose Math’s Fractions B. It has a fun, practical activity followed by a word problem extension.
It includes:
Multiplying unit fractions by whole numbers
Multiplying non-unit fractions by whole numbers
Using Fractions as operators
Some conversion of improper fractions to mixed numbers.
This activity provides a good introduction to formulae for KS3 students, meeting the following objectives from the mathematics curriculum:
Use and interpret algebraic notation
Substitute numerical values into formulae and expressions
Understand and use standard mathematical formulae
Model situations or procedures by translating them into algebraic expressions or formulae
This activity is aimed at HA Year 6/KS3 pupils. It covers the below areas in the new mathematics Year 6 programme of study:
Multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication
Multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000 giving answers up to 3 decimal places
Aswell as solving problems involving percentages, this resource also contains a useful page on the long multiplication of numbers to 2 decimal places by 2 digit whole numbers.
This activity was used with a HA Year 5 group who found time challenging. It was used with support however may be used as an independent activity for those HA Year 6. The worksheet has been designed with practice paper questions in mind. Topics covered in the activity are:
- Units of Time - Written Methods for Adding, Subtracting and Finding the difference.
- 24 hour clock - Saying time
