This resource contains 11 Sets of scaffolded NO PREP Worksheets where students learn to express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this to add two fractions with respective denominators of 10 and 100. Students will practice these skills using visual models, and then through a section of transitional worksheets move onto numerical exercises and challenges for the early finishers. This investigation looks into estimating the size of a large population of objects by taking samples and applying some basic mathematics. It encourages sharing of data, refining methods of collection of the data and discussions about the accuracy and limitations of the method used. Jacob’s Method of counting large numbers of objects involves dividing a given area into equal size areas. Estimate (by counting) the population of one square then multiply this by the number of squares in the grid. What happens if you use different size grids ? How do the estimates compare ? What happens if you take all the estimates in the class and find the range and mean ? How close are they all to the real number ? These and many more questions are laid out on the worksheet provided along with a number of prepared pictures with & without grids for printing or viewing on a computer. Worksheets with visual support Tape diagrams (or bar models) allow students to see the relationships between quantities in a simple graphical format. This visual aid helps students understand the structure of the problem and the relationships between the parts to be shared and how the relationships between quantities change when the ratio changes. They also help to develop a systematic approach to solving ratio problems. Worksheet Sets 1 to 3 The initial quantity and the ratio for sharing are given. Students must find the value of one unit of sharing, color in the tape diagram accordingly, then find the size of each sharedpart of the original quantity.
