A fun English game designed for my KS3 class to help them with their creative writing. The board contains a series of 5 prompts which will allow the learner to build their short Science Fiction story: setting, main character, main character trait, main theme and conflict. Give the student a dice piece. They will roll the dice piece 5 times moving from left to right of the board. For example: The first number refers to the setting, the second number rolled refers to the story’s main character…etc… The learner will then write a short story based on what they rolled on the prompt board.

An English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity. A starter activity / worksheet. This is a worksheet that is designed to be used alongside the play DNA. The learner will pick one of the characters from the play and create a Facebook profile for that character. They will fill in all of the information that they know about them from the play and add other additional information of their own. 24X Irregular Plural Flash Cards - double sided with polka dot print on one side. These are flash cards which are useful to use with Entry Level 3 learners. In the exam, learners are expected to write the plural form of a word. They will be expected to know a list of common plural nouns that don’t follow the usual spelling conventions. Each singular noun and its irregular plural form is on one of the 24 cards. You could add an extension activity and turn this into a matching game ( match the noun to the plural form). Learners could also create a sentence which includes each word.

Get your learners to create their own Pride emoji. This can be a good introduction to Pride month as you can discuss the colours used on the emoji’s face and what they represent. These are the same colours used in the Pride flag. My learners created their own emojis to put on our ‘Theme of the Month’ wall display: Pride Month.

32X cards that can be used to revise figurative language / persuasive language techniques including: Similes Metaphors Alliteration Onomatopoeia Idiom Oxymoron Sarcasm Irony Direct Address Facts Opinions Rhetorical Question Repetition Emotive Language Statistics Triples ( Rule of Three) There are statements on 2X cards each, which use one of the techniques above. These cards were created so that my learners could play a ‘match a pair’ game. Turn all of the cards over on the table. Get the learners to take it in turns to turn over two cards, if the statements match the technique then they ‘win’ that pair of cards. If they don’t match, then they turn them back over and another player gets to choose two cards. Continue until all the cards are matched. These can also be used as flash cards or revision cards and the cards are double sided, with a colourful polka dot design on the opposite side. Also attached, are a set of cards ( buyer to cut out) with each of the following persuasive devices names written on them. You can get your learners to place the correct statement cards under each of these headings.

Pride Bingo Game. The bingo sheet contains symbols associated with Pride. Cut out the squares on the grid sheet and place inside a container. Give each player a bingo card ( this is a 5 player game). 6X colouring sheets with different designs of animals and objects from the book. A resource to use as your class read through the novel. They can rather use them as colouring sheets or as vocabulary word banks ( writing words around the pictures).

This is a 31 page PowerPoint which can be used as an introduce your class to Dennis Kelly’s play DNA. The PPT contains eight separate options that can be used as an introductory lesson to the play. The students are to make predictions about what the play is about and what happens in the play. Front book cover analysis with 9 questions to answer relating to the front cover. Taboo - a word, guessing relating to the play. The objective of the game is for a student to sit with their back to the interactive whiteboard. The other students give the student clues and they have to guess the word on the board behind them. Word Scramble - Instead of the teacher giving students a short summary of the play, students will be asked to find this out for themselves by unscrambling the letters on the board. First Lines - Students will make predictions to what the play is about by reading and analysing the first few lines and answering 6 set questions. Students will watch a short news report which relates to the topic of the play. They will then make predictions about the play based on this report. Headline - play prediction task Pictionary - Each group will be given a copy of identical pictures. The aim is for the student’s group to work together to connect the pictures and try to predict what the play may be about. 5 minutes, 5 facts - Task
