I like an active classroom where everyone is busy. If you stop in one day it will look like chaos, but it is a carefully orchestrated chaos that cleverly disguises all the learning that we are doing. I use a lot of activities -- and keep the kids moving. Research says that if anyone sits for more than 15 minutes, their brain disengages and learning is not happening. So I design a lot of activities to get kids moving, talking, thinking and participating.

Students love to be out of their seats in the classroom, so give them some math to do. Students work in teams to solve systems of equations and complete the problems in order. Post the problems around the room and have student teams begin anywhere. They place the first answer in the pentagon on their answer sheet and then solve the problem to find their next answer--posted somewhere in the room. It can be chaotic but students enjoy this fast paced review and practice. Answer key included as well as full directions and worksheet for students to show their work.

Students practice finding the measures of complementary, supplementary, vertical and adjacent angles in this matching activity to use in a variety of ways. Cut apart and use for a single student or pair of students. The set includes 18 pairs of matching cards—one side with diagram of angles, the other side a measure. This is a two deck set. One deck has students solve for the correct angle measure. The other deck uses an algebraic expression for the angle measures. Students will need to write an equation from these expressions to solve for the value of x that gives the correct measure. In both sets, students will have opportunities to practice identifying different types of angle relationships and solving for the measures. You can use to pair up students for other activities. Writing Trig Ratios Domino Set

Students practice identifying trig ratios in a game format. Set includes 4 different sets of dominoes: 8 Dominoes, 12 Dominoes, 16 Dominoes and 24 Dominoes. Each set has a triangle with side measures and the trig ratio(either sine, cosine or tangent) sought on half the cards with the other half has a ratio. The smaller sets are great for pairs or even a student who likes to work alone. The larger sets are good for groups of 3 or 4. Dominoes are cut apart, placed face down and students draw all dominoes equally. Student with "start" places the first domino and then student with the diagram/trig ratio in their hand plays the next. This continues until one student is out of dominoes and is declared the winner. I usually give 5 points per domino left in other students hands and keep a running tally. Students love playing games in the classroom and this set will give them the opportunity to practice identifying their trig ratios. For students who struggle, have them practice checking the solutions into the system to determine the answer.

Students practice calculating slope from two points in two of these puzzles and and practice calculating slope from a tables in the other two puzzles. Set includes 4 different puzzles with 2 different levels of difficulty for students to practice finding slope. Answer Keys are included for all. In the simpler level, the outside edges are blank, so if students are having difficulty, have them arrange the pieces so the blank sides are on the outside. In the more challenging level, the edges have additional problems/answers in the border to make solving a little more difficult. Puzzles finish at about 9 inches square and can be taped/glued to card stock or poster paper and make a lovely bulletin board display. You can use the puzzles on different days, at stations or give the struggling students the simpler variation.

Students use their knowledge of circle theorems to solve for the arc measurement. Quadratic Standard Form vs Vertex Form Domino Set

Students practice converting between Quadratic standard form and vertex form by playing a lively game of dominoes. 4 complete sets included: sets of 8, 12, 16, and 24, with answer keys. Smaller sets are perfect for partner play while larger sets can be used for small groups. Students shuffle the pieces face down and divide the pieces evenly (in a set of 12, 2 players would each have 6 dominoes). The player with "Start" goes first and then each player works the problems in their hand to see which player would match the played domino. Play continues until one player is out of dominoes--and they receive 5 points for each domino left in opponents hand.

Students practice rules of exponents in these 5 puzzles of 3 different levels of difficulty. Each puzzle has 16 pieces, finishes at nearly 9 inches square and highlights one of the different rules of exponents. Answer keys are included for each. In the 2 basic level puzzle, the outside edges are blank, so if students are having difficulty, have them arrange the pieces so the blank sides are on the outside and turn the center letters toward the student. In the more challenging level, 2 of the puzzles have edges with additional problems/answers in the border to make solving a little more difficult. I always have the students start by pairing up matching squares instead of attempting to put the entire puzzle together at once. The fifth puzzle is very challenging. It has the distractor problems/answers on the borders as well as very challenging exponent problems. This finishes to a larger size to accommodate those larger problems. Puzzles can be taped or glued to card stock or scrap paper. Makes a wonderful display on your bulletin board.

Students work to identify the discriminant of a quadratic equation then collaborate with other students to check their work and check for errors. Resource includes 4 different worksheets, each identified with a symbol. Students work in home groups to calculate the discriminat of their quadratic equations. I use a timer to keep students on task, and when timer goes off, students break up into groups in each of the 4 corners with students of same worksheet to discuss problems, compare answers and check for errors. When time is up, students return to their home groups. This is a kagan strategy which works great to increase discourse in the math classroom.

Using a kagan strategy, students work in their home groups to find the missing side of a missing right triangle using the pythagorean theorem. When they are finished, they use the symbol on top of their worksheet to form a new group in one of four corners to compare answers, discuss errors and get additional help if needed. They then return to their home group to correct errors and finish activity. Included is 4 versions of a worksheet and 3 versions of an exit ticket to use as an assessment, or even a review at a later time. Answer keys are included for all.
