Model answers for AQA GCSE English Language Paper 2 from November 2018 (‘All cyclists fear bad drivers’ From The Guardian and ‘On a Bicycle in the Streets of London’ from a Victorian magazine). Three model answers each for questions 2, 3 and 4 for the purpose of showing what a full mark answers looks like as well as one and two levels below, roughly equivalent to a level 9, 7 and 5. Notes are included to show where and the mark scheme was met. Intended to be used for teachers and students to see how to improve. For example, a level 5 answer will be useful for a student currently working at level 3 or level 4. Please provide feedback on how you’ve used resource and anything that could be added to make more useful.

This is ideal for Year 9 or Year 10 and contains a first introduction to Shakespeare all the way through to writing GCSE level responses. It is designed for AQA but could easily be adapted. There is a great balance of activities building in language analysis and understanding or characters, themes and context. 21 lessons to cover a full half term with room to be flexible. All resources mentioned are included.

KS3 level introduction to structure. First lesson focuses on how punctuation and sentence length communicate feeling and atmosphere to the reader. Includes scaffolded writing models that increase in depth of explanation. Uses short extracts from Anthony Horowitz’s ‘Stormbreaker’ and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s ‘Anne of Green Gables’. Second lesson builds on this to look at the relationship between structure and genre, through tension. Uses tension graphs and extracts including John Grisham’s ‘The Firm’, Len Deighton’s ‘The Ipcress File’ and Kate Morton’s ‘The House at Riverton’ as well the ‘Black Panther’ trailer. Builds on analysis skils towards evaluation.

A 24 lesson scheme that supports a full reading of the play with an emphasis on building independent close analysis skills and personal interpretation. Close reading covers key themes, quotes and relevant context as well as structure, language, form and narrative. Many opportunities for written response building from a model paragraph structure towards independence. This is easily adaptable for more condensed reading and differentiation.
