A lesson that helps students study the opening to the classic The Monkey's Paw in detail, with analysis, creative writing ideas, sample PEEs and AFL techniques. Easily stretchable to 2-3 lessons.

This lesson focuses on AQA English Language Paper 2. It helps students understand the requirements for the paper by breaking down exactly what is meant by a writer's viewpoint. It contains a small extract for students to annotate and look for explicit / implied meaning. Also features an example Q3 for students and helpful sentence starters. This lesson would ideally suit a less able to middle ability group but could be used as a refresher for top sets. Would also be ideal for Ofsted / Lesson observations as it shows clear progress.

A slide-show with printable posters for classrooms; I usually use these at the start each year to remind students of important punctuation. I have used the slide-show as part of a whole-school assembly and then the challenge at the end is used as a reward scheme.

A double lesson pack to help students understand Hawk Roosting. The first lesson focusses on the theme of power and language analysis whilst the second lesson breaks the poem down into individual words that students use as a basis for a creative writing piece.

A lesson based on Belfast Confetti that allows students to explore the language and punctuation used and its effect on the reader. Features an engaging starter, contextual information, active analysis activity and a news report based extended writing task.

A poem that helps students understand how to respond to an unseen poem. It provides a step-by-step method of annotating the poem, key language features to look for, links to the mark scheme, example answer and an acronym for use in the exam itself. The poem used is Long Distance II.

A lesson that looks at Jessie Pope's poem Who's for the Game? Contains contextual references, key language techniques, example PEE structured answer and peer-assessment plenary. Suitable for a lower to middle ability KS3 group, although could easily be adapted to a more able set.

A lesson based on the character 'Skellig' that helps prepares students for the English Language AQA Paper 1 Q2. This lesson has been designed to help transition students from KS3 to KS4 and to familiarise them with the techniques needed to annotate fiction texts. Features a subject term based starter, annotation notes, extract and sample question with example answer.

This lesson enables students to learn and understand persuasive techniques. It features an example article for them to annotate and an example GCSE style question with exemplar answer for them to use as a basis for their own writing. Engaging starter activity and peer-assessment plenary. This lesson could easily be stretched to two lessons: one based on the reading and understanding a further lesson based on writing.

A mock exam assessment for the new AQA spec GCSE exam for The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The question used is: Starting with this extract, how does Stevenson present Dr Jekyll and his lifestyle in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Write about: • How Stevenson presents Dr Jekyll in this extract • How Stevenson presents Dr Jekyll’s lifestyle in the novel as whole Perfect for use in class, as a homework or for a full mock assessment.

A lesson devised for top sets that breaks down the new AQA marking criteria and explores what is meant by 'precise', 'critical' and 'judicious'. It also breaks down the AOs into manageable chunks and provides examples of analysis from different parts of the play. The lesson then moves onto The Witches' Spell and it's use of Trochaic Tetrameter; it also includes a sample answer for students level and grade with the marking criteria.

This lesson helps students to understand the requirements for the main reading question of Paper 2. A lot students struggle with understanding what the writer's opinions and attitudes are; this lesson helps to guide them through the question with a starter, broken down examples, grid activity, example answer and clear links to the new marking criteria. PLEASE NOTE: The source material for this is based on the AQA Key Stage 3 Test Pack (Year 7 Pack 1 Paper 2 - Amber and the Watercress girl). This is easily available on the E-AQA website, hence why it's not included here. This is very well suited to middle - lower ability GCSE students.
