Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation with Charlie Brooker!

(0)
This resource is based on 2 very funny, engaging and well written articles by Charlie Brooker. I have made questions for each article as a way of spicing up RUAE practice with my senior classes. My pupils have responded very well to both articles and the questions for each passage are up to date with current SQA standards. No marking scheme.

Slab Boys Revision Grid/ Exam Help SQA

These grids have been designed to be used in conjunction with the 2015 and 2018 SQA Past Papers for John Byrne’s, “The Slab Boys,” Both grids support the pupils’ ability to answer language questions ( amongst others) by focussing their thinking so as their answer is in line with what appears on the marking scheme. I made this resource as some pupils were struggling to identify and analyse the language techniques apparent in the characters’ dialogue . Each grid also includes help and guidance with answering the 10 mark question, with room on the sheets to complete each question.

The Great Gatsby: Critical Essay Guidance PowerPoint Higher/ GCSE

(0)
A PowerPoint presentation which should be used to teach pupils how to structure the main body paragraphs of their Critical Essays and analyse and evaluate their quotations properly using an approach called “TIE” ( Technique, Importance and Evaluation) There are 5 example paragraphs which I have labelled, and which include full and detailed analysis. Obviously the slides are printable and I’ve found a useful task is to have the pupils annotate the paragraph once you have taught them and taken them through a couple of examples. Critical Essay Writing Help: Learn how to use “Peer” to structure your paragraphs & Learn how to use “TIE” to fully analyse and evaluate your quotations.

Flowers, by Robin Jenkins Essay and Placemat Activity 2021

New for 2021. This resource includes an example Critical Essay (A), for an “interesting/ memorable character” type essay question, but can easily be adapted to fit another essay question. The essay follows a neat, predictable paragraph structure: Topic Sentence, Point, Evidence, Analysis & Relate to Essay Question. It also includes a placemat activity which correlates with the essay whereby pupils find the evidence/ analysis and record it on the placemat. This works well as a revision placemat.

Advertising Unit: The Dragon's Apprentice

(0)
This colourful and engaging unit of work takes the pupils through various aspects of advertising such as: logos, the use of colour, slogans, persuasive language etc. Pupils also watch examples of Dragon’s Den pitches online ( teacher can choose these, although I used reggae Reggae sauce and I-Teddy) as a way of thinking about their own product and pitches. The overall objective of the unit is for the class to work in groups on pitching an “impossible product” to “The Dragons” demonstrating their understanding of advertising conventions learned in class. There is also a Numeracy element as, prior to their pitch, the group must plan and think of target market, number of projected sales, growth etc. This unit is lots of fun and is best suited to S2/3 ( year 9/10).

Looking for a fresh way to teach Creative Writing? This is a unit of work designed to teach pupils to write creatively within the genre of Magical Realism. The unit inlcludes the following: a printable unit, two well known examples of Magical Realism fiction and a support PowerPoint to introduce them to the genre with various tasks and visual stimuli. What’s nice about this unit is that it really can be used for a variety of year groups as once the pupils are familiar with the genre they will differentiate via response; I have used this with S1-S3,and the pupils really enjoy it. The unit will take roughly 3 weeks to complete and includes a variety of Reading, Writing, Talk and Listening tasks to keep them busy and motivated! Enjoy! And please leave a review if you decide to purchase! :)
