ALevel lesson for OCR course Russia: 1894-1941 but can be used for any ALevel with a question about Stalin’s control/ purges or use of terror. This is an incredibly detailed lesson- my motto with ALevel is I do the reading so you don’t have to! I’ve read extensively and included a lot of detail within all the resources. Demonstrates turning points in Stalin’s rule e.g. the death of his wife and the 17th Party Congress and significance. Also includes key case studies e.g. the Ryutin Platform and impact. Examines the role of NKVD and various leaders including their purges! Includes Stalin’s purges of various sectors of Russian society and the Communist Party.

Lesson for OCR ALevel spec Russia 1894-1941 but useful for any other spec involving Russian revolution- can also be simplified for GCSE. This lesson is designed to reflect on Nicholas’ problems and explain the growth of opposition against the Tsar in Russia prior to the 1905 revolution. Looking at the long term impact of Alexander IIs reforms such as the creation of Zemstvo and Emancipation of Serfs and the political spectrum. Lesson designed to take 2 hours plus homework- the Marxism stuff takes a lot of explaining!

OCR ALevel History Russia 1894-1941 Topic 2: Towards a Constitutional Monarchy. This two hour lesson examines the creation of the Duma from the October Manifesto and the limits of the Fundamental laws. Also examines the challenges of the Duma and the makeup of them and why Nicholas dissolved them each time. Includes detailed information and all resources needed if you do not have textbook pages from Corin and Fiehn- I have typed up all necessary info onto documents to accompany the lesson.

ALevel lesson (2 hours long) on the Revolt of the Northern Earls 1569 Designed for OCR Tudors Rebellion and Disorder course- looks at the rebellion according to the themes- causes, nature, threat, reasons for defeat and impact. Very detailed and comprehensive resources, all information included- no textbook needed. Also includes analysis and evaluation tasks and critical thinking.

ALevel Russia OCR- can be used for other specs and GCSE. THis is an in depth lesson looking at why the Reds won the Civil War As with all my ALevel lessons, they take two hours plus homework. Fully resourced and detailed lesson- does not require textbooks. Includes a detailed essay plan for the 20 mark question assessing role of Trotsky in Red victory.

This is my first double lesson for ALevel Russia (OCR) course 1894-1941 I use pages from Oxley/ Corin and Fiehn or Access to History by Lynch but students can do their own research with ipads or use the slides also if you do not have access to any of these textbooks to find the information. There is a lot of info in here from various sources so does not matter if you do not have the textbooks. Looking at an intro to Russia in 1894 including the context of Alexander II and III reforms and autocratic repression and how this legacy would cause Nicholas II problems from the outset. Also examines the issues/ challenges facing Nicholas as he ascends the throne in 1894. Students complete a “health report” on RUssia and then analyse Nicholas’ main problems ready for the next lesson (Opposition to Nicholas’ rule). Includes make yyour own card sort activity and some analytical thinking about the positive and negative impact of reform and beginning indurstrialisation. Will actually take 3 hours plus to get through it all - there is a lot! I am including my course guide which took hours in this lesson has topic check lists, key people, key vocab etc which is needed for students as well as tips for good essays and exam paper past questions. This is why this is a bit more expensive than my usual lessons- will get your ALevel Russia students off to a flying start. This is also part of my bundle of resources for ALevel Russia if you want to look at that rather than buying individual lessons.

Double Lesson for ALevel OCR TUdor Rebellions focused on the Oxfordshire and Essex Rebellions- more on the Essex Rebellion since Oxfordshire is not very significant and doesn’t have lots of material. Very comprehensive 2 x 2 hour lessons (more if you use the Starkey youtube clip)- ((you may want to include a disclaimer about his views not being the views of your History department!)) and use all of the reading. Essex is such a character- I love teaching this. You can also buy this as part of a bundle of Tudor Rebellions lessons on Rebellions against Mary and Elizabeth (England only) I have a separate bundle for Ireland.

2 hour ALevel lesson designed to evaluate stability in Russia between 1906-1914, Designed for OCR course but can be used for AQA or Edexcel also. Very comprehensive with detailed resources for independent learning and enquiries, debate and discussion. Follows my lesson on Stolypin and Witte and evaluating their relative significance. This is also designed to go before studying the impact of WWI on RUssia so students can evaluate how far WWI caused the February revolution 1917. Lesson on Living Conditions in the USSR under Stalin Looks at the consequences of the 5 year plans and includes analysis and evaluation of the impact on certain groups in society. Fully resourced lesson and includes all information students need including colour code with lots of factual evidence for essays. NOTE: I include images (PNG) files for illustration purposes - ignore these and open the word documents and powerpoint files for actual resources :)

OCR History lesson for ALevel course Russia 1894-1941 but can be adapted to any Alevel course with Lenin or simplified down for GCSE. -Lesson evaluates Lenin’s successes and failures. Ideally will be taught at the end of my unit on Lenin but includes all the relevant evidence via a card sort activity and info sheet to be used as a stand alone lesson.

Edexcel GCSE lesson on Persecution of Minorities in Nazi Germany Includes detail of persecution of Slavs, Roma and Sinti Peoples, Jews, People living with disabilities/ mental illness and Homosexuals with some video clips and case studies. Also includes exam skills questions on Kristallnacht and a source skills modelling activity to teach inferences and how to write Q3 a, b, c and d questions for Paper 3 which students struggle with.

Detailed and fully resourced 2 hour lesson on October manifesto and Fundamental laws as well as the Consequences of the 1905 Revolution and analysis of how far Oct manifesto stabilised Russia. How did the Tsar survive 1905? Analysis of the reasons 1905 was different to 1917. Detailed impact on political consequences including splits in the Liberal opposition- creation of the Kadets and Octobrist factions and also the impact on the Soviets and losing support temporarily for the SDs in the cities. Useful for Senior Leadership Links and Heads of Department/ Faculty/ Key Stage. My department recently had a very positive experience in an Ofsted Deep Dive. I have attached some useful materials to help other Heads of Department to support the process and to support their teams in what could be (but doesn’t need to be) a stressful experience. Firstly it is important to know- this is not a quick fix- you cannot pull the wool over their eyes if your department has a lot of work to do. However it is not a problem if you have areas of development as long as you and your team know what they are and you have a plan to address them.
