A couple of years ago I wrote a post about different approaches for solving more advanced ratio problems at Higher GCSE. I’ve now made a lesson to accompany this post. This was designed for a Year 11 double lesson, though it might need longer. It features two approaches: equivalent fractions with algebra, plus the scaling method. These are designed with AQA ratio GCSE questions in mind. See the notes under each slide for full sources. I have provided a PDF version in case font/formatting is lost in PowerPoint, but the PowerPoint is better because it has animations and notes.

I was asked to create a PowerPoint to accompany this resource https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/sk18maths-revision-booklets-foundation-key-skills-11891525 by @SK18Maths. I adapted his algebra booklet slightly and created an accompanying PowerPoint that is designed to be used in form time. These form time interventions are only 20-25 minutes long so the idea is that in each form time the teacher briefly reviews a topic using the slides and then pupils complete one page in the booklet. Full instructions are in the PowerPoint. Of course this PowerPoint and booklet could easily used in longer revision sessions by covering multiple topics in one session.

A simple worksheet or quiz on metric unit conversions. Useful in class at KS3 or for GCSE revision at KS4. Also included is guidance for GCSE teachers on what unit conversion students need to memorise and which ones are provided in their GCSE exams. Word versions are provided for editing if required.

This editable assessment is designed to identify gaps in key skills. It was designed for the end of Year 7/start of Year 8 but would work in other year groups. It might be used at the start of an intervention in order to identify focus areas. The assessment has been written to minimise printing costs (3 A4 sheets only) and marking time (there are no method marks so anyone can easily mark this). It’s also fairly EAL-friendly, with minimal wordy questions.

This assessment tests basic pre-requisite maths skills on entry to A level. It's editable so if you like the format but don't like the questions, feel free to change them! The idea is to give this 15 minute test in the first maths lesson of Year 12 in order to identify any students who need immediate intervention. The intervention sessions can then be tailored to specific skills eg a session on expanding brackets, and a separate session on solving equations. This assessment is print-friendly (one side of A4) and quick to mark. Teachers can complete the mini-feedback sheet for each student and staple it to their assessment, with details of upcoming intervention sessions.

In this activity students have to solve angle problems and specify each angle fact that they used in a grid. They then compare their methods to those used by their partner - the idea is to generate class discussion about alternative methods.

These revision activities are for Higher GCSE 9 -1. Students work through the questions on the sheet to revise facts and procedures for a range of topics. Two revision activities for Higher GCSE students (designed for students working at Grades 6 - 8). Students work through the questions on the sheet to revise facts and procedures for a range of topics. This is very ‘print budget friendly’, with a single side of A4 providing enough questions to fill a whole lesson (expect it to take around 45 minutes). Based on an idea by Stuart Price (@sxpmaths), these ‘Correct Answer Only’ activities are for C1, C2, C3 and C4. They are designed for the Edexcel specification but use past OCR exam questions. Students work on their own to complete 8 questions, then submit their final answers for marking. They simply get a tick or cross for each answer and then have to re-try anything they get wrong. These typically take a good 30 - 45 minutes to complete and are cheap to print (one A4 sheet per student) so perfect for A level revision.

Skills practice for GCSE 9 - 1. Students find the area under six graphs - the first four graphs involve straightforward shapes, the final two graphs require splitting the area into strips and estimating total area using trapeziums. Students are asked to include units to make them think about the outcome of finding areas (ie vertical axis units x horizontal axis units). Answers are included, plus an editable version of this resource.
