Breakfast GCSE Warm Ups - Non Calculator

(55)
These activities are designed for a breakfast revision session prior to a non calculator GCSE paper. There are four levels (2 Foundation and 2 Higher) and I’ve provided an editable version in case you want to adapt for your students. Answers are provided. The calculator version is here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/breakfast-gcse-warm-ups-calculator-11909594
Higher GCSE Ratio Approaches

Higher GCSE Ratio Approaches

(32)
A couple of years ago I wrote a post about different approaches for solving more advanced ratio problems at Higher GCSE. I’ve now made a lesson to accompany this post. This was designed for a Year 11 double lesson, though it might need longer. It features two approaches: equivalent fractions with algebra, plus the scaling method. These are designed with AQA ratio GCSE questions in mind. See the notes under each slide for full sources. I have provided a PDF version in case font/formatting is lost in PowerPoint, but the PowerPoint is better because it has animations and notes.

GCSE Non Calculator Revision Mats: Higher and Foundation

(26)
These resources are for mixed-topic non-calculator GCSE revision. There are four levels: Foundation is aimed at students working at Grades 1 - 3 Foundation Plus is aimed students working at Grades 3 - 5 Higher is aimed at students working at Grades 4 - 6 Higher Plus is aimed at students working at Grades 6 - 9. I printed onto two sheets of A3 (stapled) but they would work on A4 too. Answers are provided. Editable versions are provided in case you want to change some questions to suit the level of your students. I wrote the questions but the images are lifted from Google images (plus one is from Don Steward and another from CIMT). I have a similar set of calculator resources here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gcse-calculator-revision-mats-higher-and-foundation-12119735 and here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gcse-calculator-revision-mats-set-2-higher-and-foundation-12128297 Hope these are helpful. If you spot an error please let me know (@mathsjem).

Hope these are helpful. If you spot an error please let me know (@mathsjem).

Spot the Mistake: GCSE Maths Revision

(11)
This is a set of 10 questions for Higher tier and 10 questions for Foundation tier. In each case all but one question has been answered incorrectly. Pupils have to identify and correct the mistakes. The questions are taken from AQA Legacy Papers.
Introduction to Writing Algebraically

Introduction to Writing Algebraically

(9)
Based on an exercise I spotted in an antique maths textbook, this exercise is designed to build confidence in writing algebraically. Students are presented with pairs of questions: in each pair, one question involves numbers, and the equivalent question involves algebra. The idea is that if they know how to do it with numbers, then they just do the same thing with the algebra. This should be an accessible introduction to algebra, drawing on students’ existing skills. An editable version is provided, and answers are included.

Averages homework
mrsmorgan1mrsmorgan1

Averages homework

(6)
This is a Pret homework for mean, median, mode and range. In Pret homeworks, pupils practise, recall, extend and think. These homeworks are typically followed in class with spelling or memory tests and discussions about research findings. For an editable version of this homework and Pret homeworks for many more topics, see http://prethomework.weebly.com/
C2 Revision Clock
mrsmorgan1mrsmorgan1

C2 Revision Clock

(6)
Each student is given 12 questions (on A4) and a clock face (on A3). Students write their workings and answers in each section of the clock. Every 5 minutes or so students should be moving on to the next question/section. If all goes to plan they complete all 12 questions in a one hour lesson. When I do this lesson I set a timer to sound every five minutes - every time the buzzer sounds I write an answer on the board. This revision activity allows students to practise working under timed conditions and keeps them on task and engaged throughout the revision lesson. The questions here are taken from IYGB papers. A bonus question is provided for early finishers. Answers are also provided.
Year 7 Warm Up Booklet
mrsmorgan1mrsmorgan1

Year 7 Warm Up Booklet

(6)
I made this booklet for Autumn 1 2020 because I’ll be moving classrooms between each lesson. To ensure students can get started as soon as I arrive (or before I arrive!) I will hand out these warm up booklets at the start of the half-term. The booklet contains 24 lessons’ worth of warm up questions. They are all retrieval of learning from Years 1 - 6. I have used SATs questions. This booklet is editable so you can adapt it for your class. I have included answers (sorry about the quality of the scanning) but instead of using these answers, it would be better to go through the answers using a blank booklet and a visualiser.
Describing Box Plots
mrsmorgan1mrsmorgan1

Describing Box Plots

(4)
Pupils work in pairs - one is given Set A and the other is given Set B. They sit back-to-back and take it in turns to describe and draw the box plots on the sheet. They should be encouraged to use the correct vocabulary ie minimum, maximum, quartile, median, scale. This is good practice of reading and drawing box plots.
Maths in the Simpsons - Enrichment Lecture
mrsmorgan1mrsmorgan1

Maths in the Simpsons - Enrichment Lecture

(4)
This enrichment lecture is based on ideas from Simon Singh’s book ‘The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets’. It covers Fermat’s Last Theorem, Mersenne primes, perfect numbers, narcissistic numbers, binary numbers and rock-paper-scissors. The slides include footage from The Simpsons, Futurama and The Big Bang Theory. There are 6 videos embedded in the slides which I believe you will have to save alongside the presentation to make sure they run when clicked. If you’d like some help preparing speaking notes for these slides please tweet me (@mathsjem).
