A guide to setting/using effective hinge questions in your lesson to demonstrate visible progress.
Teachers must be confident that students have an understanding of the topic studied before moving on; hinge questions provide a fantastic (and quick) platform to visibly measure progress.
*This resource is targeted at the Arts but can be adapted for any subject.

A great starter worksheet for the topic of Latin Music. Can be used before you start teaching latin music or further into the topic to test students knowledge.
This worksheet features key instruments and countries as well as a basic Clave rhythm activity.
Target Students: 10 - 14
Level: 3-5
This worksheet can be enlarged to A3 for a group activity.
This is a quick guide to setting meaningful 'learning' outcomes when lesson planning.
I created this resource for the staff in my faculty after it was apparent that they were setting "doing" activities.
When prompted by observers it was apparent that students knew what they were doing...but not what they were learning.
*This resource is designed for performing arts however it can be quickly adapted to any subject area.
This is a complete KS3 scheme of work for the topic of Cyberbullying (ideal for year 8/9)
This SoW has been designed to be delievered with or without specialist knowledge so could be useful for a long term cover teacher. Each lesson contains a PowerPoint with teacher notes (lesson plan) incorporated into each slide.
This is a 7 week SoW and also includes:
Appropriate resources
Formal Scheme or Work overview
Self Assessed Traking sheet (end of project)
(x2) homework opportunities
I have created this Drama scheme of work as an 'off the shelf' unit of work that contains everything you need. All you are required to do is print appropriate numbers of resources/assessment sheets as required.
Each lesson has differentiated progress learning outcomes that follow the format: GOOD, BETTER, BEST (feel free to adapt inline with your own institution's policy)
The self assessment tracker has been designed to produce measureable/evidential outcomes for 'Life After Levels' and includes an opportunity for students to write their own reflective analysis (www/ebi) and to set their "Next Steps" developmental targets.
I believe in creating engaging opportunities for students that appeals to their needs. This is a modern SoW which addresses many of the current issues our teenagers are facing. Each PowerPoint should be used to 'guide' the learning and not to actually 'be' the learning. Encourage active participation in the every lesson and do mix the students into different ability/social groups.
Each powerpoint lesson has a title page but this is for reference only and shouldn't be displayed to the students. They are to see the starter activity slide to engage thinking from the moment they enter the room.
A collection of developing Gamelan activities to test performance and composition ability.
This worksheet includes a solo/paired composition activity, a key musical instrument identification task and a performance activity.
Age: 11-14
Level: 4-5
This is a learning activity "Beatles Bingo" and Homework that I created for my GCSE Music (AQA 8271) students to support the Beatles set study pieces; With a Little Help, Lucy in the Sky & Within You Without You.
The instructions for Beatles bingo are included in the file. Sadly I obviously can't supply you with the audio tracks.
The homework 'Sgt Peppers Analysis' is broken into the three songs with questions aimed at the different students prior attainment/abilities (see below) There is also a generic PLC included for marking & feedback. I also usually photocopy an addition generic piece of music revision onto all my set study homeworks, again this is set to the students ability.
With a Little Help - Lower Ability
Lucy in the Sky - Middle
Within You Without You - Upper/Higher
This is a complete scheme of work for KS3/4 Music that covers the various aspects of music for film (moving image)
This scheme of work will last 6-8 lessons and has all the resources you need. The videos for this scheme are available for free (due to copywrite) and can be found in my shop. Please note that these resources are for classroom delivery only and appropriate thanks should be given to the copywrite owners of the materials included.
There are teachers notes and a lesson plan built into the PowerPoint for your reference.
There is also a PLC included to review the students learning journey.
Please feel free to adapt the S.o.W or resources as you feel appropriate for your learners and your delivery style.
Skills being covered:
> Listening Skills
> Timbre discovery & exploration
> Compositional skills
> Analysis of emotion & effect
I hope you enjoy delivering this scheme of work as much as I did.

10 question audio worksheet to test GCSE Music student's ability to identify pitch audibly in preparation for the listening exam.
These questions are of varying difficulty but all follow a style as you would expect to find in the summer exam. The rhythm is given but students need to notate at the correct pitch. I used this for a 60 miute revision session but could also be used for a starter or independent revision. Please feel free to share with your students via your VLE.
There is an audio track per question. The first 5 questions are based around the same overall 4 bar rhythm. The remaining 5 questions are different 4 bar compositions.
I will be making more examples like this to test intervals and rhythmic identification.
(Apologies that I couldn't remove the semibreve rest from the bar students are to write their answer but this was due to the software I used to create these scores)
A simple, colourful composition guide for creating latin rhythms based around chord sequences.
This sheet can follow on from teaching students the Clave rhythm (as found on my other resource)
Age: 11-14
Level: 4-6
Music Tarsia Puzzle of key words & terms. Aimed at GCSE & KS5 as a starter or revision activity.
Split the class into smaller mixed ability groups and give them a tarsia puzzle to solve and offer a prize (I find chocolate works)
Extension - get the students to design their own (on the back of the completed puzzle) for another group.
A resource for musical theatre and the teaching of time signatures. This is based around the melody of America from West Side Story.
