A LEVEL MUSIC 10-MINUTE LISTENING LESSON STARTERS EDEXCEL 9MU0 - AREA OF STUDY 2: INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC These exercises have been designed to be used as lesson starters for A level music students to encourage wider listening, develop aural analysis and observation skills in unfamiliar music and to prompt wider exploration and discussion related to this particular area of study. Whilst this resource is primarily intended for use with the Edexcel 9MU0 course, it could also be relevant to, and freely adapted to suit, other A level music courses. This resources includes: –> 10 listening exercises closely related to the AoS2 Set Works. –> Comprehensive answers complete with teaching and exam tips. –> Audio tracks for each exercise in mp3 format.

A total of 20 listening tests testing aural skills, short melodic and rhythmic dictation, analytical awareness and understanding of the Elements of Music. This resource includes the following for each question: –> audio extracts in .mp3 format –> skeleton scores (embedded in the questions pages) –> printable question pages in .docx format –> full answers with contextual information –> images of the skeleton score in .png format (for alternative methods of delivery) –> files of the skeleton score in Finale 26 .musx format (for alternative methods of delivery) Due to a lack of good quality resources available for skeleton-score type, unidentified listening practice, these were written initially with the iGCSE exam syllabus in mind but are also excellent practice for other GCSE Music syllabuses and would also serve as good revision exercises for A-Level Music students.

Students may be expected to label chords in Section A Listening exercises in the exam, this resource has been designed as a fun, simple chordal arrangement for students to practise playing along with the recordings. Through repeated practice, students will develop solid familiarity with the harmonic structure of these songs.
