This is a Halloween comprehension passage. It is in line with the SQA National 5 Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluating paper. This resource comes with passage, a variety of questions (in your own words, summarise, language, link) and a marking scheme. It is targeted at S4 or Y10 pupils but could also be used by a decent S3 or Y9 class. The passage is adapted from a Guardian article on Halloween traditions being adopted in Australia. This could be used in clas or set as a homework assignment.

National/ Nat 5 model essay for ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ by Evan Hunter. This essay focuses on a story with an unexpected ending and follows a PEER paragraph structure.

I created this resource to support students who were struggling with the structure of the 8-mark question. The resource includes ‘fill in the blank’ sections under the appropriate headings in order to give students scaffolding with this question.

This power point will take pupils through the structure of a Critical Essay on ‘A Hanging’ by George Orwell. The essay follows a PEER structure and offers examples. It tackles the following question: Choose a non-fiction text which made you think about a social issue. Explain briefly what that issue is and at greater length show how the writer’s treatment of the issue conveyed her or his point of view. In your answer you must refer closely to the text and to at least two of: setting, theme, style, descriptive detail, or any other relevant feature. This resource is ideal for use with a National 5, GCSE, AS Level, or Higher English class.

This resource encourages pupils to consider the theme of racism in this novel and analyse real life examples of racism in society.

This activity includes model paragraphs/ stimulus for writing a scary Halloween story. I used this with my class after spending time learning about developing setting, character and plot. Pupils were given a stimulus picture and asked to write a descriptive story in 45 minutes in order to give a snapshot of their ability/ learning.

This is a simple homework task that asks pupils to create similes and metaphors for scary images. This is perfect to use as homework or a starter/ extension task around Halloween time! This resource is perfect for KS3 or BGE students in S1-S3.
