Included in this resource pack is a copy of Roald Dahl’s short story ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ with comprehension questions, note making tasky, key quotations/ analysis, essay plans and an example National 5 Essay.

This SoW encourages pupils to analyse characters, setting and key incidents from the award winning Nicola Morgan story ‘Fleshmarket’. It includes a scaffolded Critical Essay plan. This is ideal for use with S1, S2 & S3 classes to teach them the basics of Critical Essay Writing.

This is a guided writing task. It prompts creative writing by using scary images and work banks and examples of effective creative writing. The presentation then goes onto plan for a scary story and includes a review sheet at the end. This resource is best suited to Y7-9 or S1-S3 students. This resource is an ideal way to prepare students for the Scottish Texts National 5 paper. I used it with S3 students in order to prepare them for annotating and analysing poetry independently and to explain the 8- mark question structure.

This power point will take pupils through the structure of a Critical Essay on ‘A Hanging’ by George Orwell. The essay follows a PEER structure and offers examples. It tackles the following question: Choose a non-fiction text which made you think about a social issue. Explain briefly what that issue is and at greater length show how the writer’s treatment of the issue conveyed her or his point of view. In your answer you must refer closely to the text and to at least two of: setting, theme, style, descriptive detail, or any other relevant feature. This resource is ideal for use with a National 5, GCSE, AS Level, or Higher English class.
