This resource has been trialled and used in p4 and p5 classes in Northern Ireland,But i think it would work well throughout the keystage.
Shared education in Northern Ireland was designed to bring schools from different traditions together.
The Design of this Shared Education Module is to bring children together and show them how cinema began ,whilst allowing them the opportunity to become filmmakers.
In the same way we encourage children to become writers and create their own stories after reading books. We should take the time to show how stories can also be told in a visual way.
Hugo has often been referred to as Martin Scorsese’s love letter to Cinema. It is an excellent way into the Early History of Modern Cinema for Children.
This resource is to accompany the movie “Song of the Sea”. It has been used with great success in P4 classrooms in Northern Ireland and would anticipate that is well suited to year 3 and year 4 classes in England.
The Oscar Nominated Movie “Song of the Sea” is widely available and quite often screened on terrestrial channels
The resource was created for use with classes and film clubs alike as i have been an education ambassador for Into Film for several years and it was aimed at the shared education scheme that has been in place for the last 5 years. Sadly that scheme has come to an end and therefore i have decided to make this scheme available to use for a wider audience,
it consists of a pupil work book , notes for the scheme ( with a little background knowledge behind the movie and the activities). There is also a set of yoga cards based on the characters in the movie. The children really enjoyed this!
These activities have been used with great success in P6 and P7 classrooms in Northern Ireland.
There is a clear focus on literacy , particularly in terms of persuasive writing , critical thinking (e.g. reviews),examining characters and the style of writing of the novel compared to how the story is told in film.
However thinking skills are looked at too in terms of diamond ranking and hot seating.
This workbook is to accompany the 2014 movie ‘Paper Planes’
The movie tackles themes of :
Bullying,
Similarities and Difference,
Mental Wellbeing ,
Mindfulness,
Overcoming Adversity
Bereavement.
It also has at its core the concept of Flight and the making of Paper Airplanes.
I developed this resource to support learning in the class alongside the 2014 movie.
We watched the movie in short episodes of about 20 minutes ( its 96 minutes in length.
The children enjoyed it immensely - it formed part of our work on Shared Education which brings children from Catholic and Protestant children together here in Northern Ireland.
Included here are some videos we used and just watched about making Paper airplanes. (The eagle one is a little ambitious but can be linked to the children for them to try at home)
There are clips from the movie and links to two trailers as well as two short movies that have paper planes as their theme
Paper Plane
Paperman
We also simulated the competition a the end of the movie and awarded prizes to the winners.
