Lesson PowerPoint: Mystery French-Speaking Country Cultural Lesson + Worksheet (Mauritius)

(0)
An excellent lesson, providing students with clues as to a mystery Francophone country and asking them to detect which one it might be. 19 slides in total, great fun to teach. Fully animated with all answers, clear directions for students and support for teacher in Notes section of slides if required. Challenge options included within activities to extend HA. The lesson begins by asking students to note down on their whiteboards all that they know about France, and all that they know about French-speaking countries. Activity 1 - Match the French name for the country to the English translation and the correct flag, drawing a star next to the country if you think it has French as an official language. Activity 2- Match the Mystery Country's national dishes to the English translations, and the images if possible. Activity 3 - Use the French clues provided to locate the Mystery Country on the map. Activity 4 - Use the map and the images to work out where the Mystery Country might be. Activity 5 - See how many phrases can be recognised in the song lyrics for a famous band from the Mystery Country (Kana - Pas de problèmes). Think, pair, share and singalong at end. Lesson is reviewed using a Plenary Triangle, asking students to reflect on one thing that they knew already, three things that they've learned during the lesson, and one thing that they would like to know more about. The final section can be set as a research project for homework if wished. Great to fit into modules about Travel and Tourism, food, song, cultural similarities and differences, geography, or as a filler lesson before a holiday. A very popular lesson that always goes down a storm!

Observer Servers - Group work peer observation and reflection

Observer Servers - Group work peer observation and reflection

(0)
Presentation guiding students through the process of peer observation of behaviour in group work and the effects on learning. Based on the activity in the excellent 'The Teacher's Toolkit' by Paul Ginnis. Used to great effect, a real behaviour-for-learning changer and very insightful for students. Definitely worth doing! I use every year with each class to install values and bring attention to the ripple effect of any behaviour that doesn't support learning. The feedback makes much more of a difference coming from their peers rather than me! Use alongside a group activity (for example a reading text and questions), and allow time at the start of the lesson for an explanation and a full reflection at the end (15 minutes+).

Reading activity follows, matching the descriptions of school bags to the right pictures. Speaking activity with dice is next and a writing activity to finish. Scaffold provided for LA. Italian New Year Traditions - KS3 - Worksheet and Answers

Italian New Year Traditions - KS3 - Worksheet and Answers

(0)
Excellent resource, outlining in four short paragraphs a series of Italian traditions and customs for New Year's Eve. Document includes a short text, a series of questions in English to consolidate understanding, answers to the questions and helpful vocabulary. The text is adapted from a longer article online (link on worksheet) and can easily be lengthened if not challenging enough for group. I use this with a year 7 and a year 10 Italian class, both several months into their Italian language studies. Acts as a great springboard for further discussion and cultural comparisons, and introduces them to a range of authentic vocabulary. A perfect first lesson back in January, topical and interesting.
