TOPIC 8 Fuels and Earth science PAPER 2- NEW for SEPTEMBER 2017
CC16b Fractional distillation of crude oil
L2 Fractional distillation
or lower ability
L2 and L3 Fractional distillation
For the lesson:
You will need to laminate the fractional distillation sheet, the cards to go with the sheet and you will also require some string (not provided). Instructions are contained at the bottom of each slide.
This lesson allows students to generate an A3 sheet for the properties (viscosity, boiling point, ignition and chain length) and the uses for each fraction.
Students will then require to complete and A4 sheet containing all of the information.
I have done this in 2's so students can complete the A3 sheet themselves OR if limited printing allowed I have made stations around the room for each property and allowed students to complete a market place activity to fill in the student sheet. Either works fine and also depends on ability
LESSON
To understand how crude oil is separated into useful fractions
To be able to explain the differences between each fraction
To explain a use for each fraction
All extension questions available on each slide
Answers all underneath each slide
Support also available where necessary

AQA AS-level Chemistry 2015 specification for printing on dividers to give to students (CHECKLISTS)
AS specification
I printed the specification onto dividers and then handed them out to students - they can mark off when the content has been taught.
Students really liked the checklist - especially for when they are ill, absent, revision and in particular to separate out work when taught it in class.
I used different coloured card (dividers) to print it onto to help students identify different parts of the course.
All hand typed and required practicals are highlighted for easy viewing
