Before children can estimate, they need to be able to round up or down. This is a great introduction to rounding to the nearest multiple of 10 up to 100. The children can practice identifying which multiple of ten is on either side of a given number. They then use the rounding rule to round up or down. This is a great differentiated activity to show mastery maths and reasoning with numbers up to 100. Children will be required to reason with problems such as Adam can read 8 pages a day. Estimate how many he can read in a week. The children will round first to solve this answer and show their reasoning. Encourage use of APE it - Answer it, prove it and then explain it to achieve mastery skills.
Suitable for the new year 2 curriculum in maths.
Year 2 working at greater depth and mastery level. This challenge is suitable for HAPS to challenge them to record in tables( by creating their own) and think about how to work systematically. It challenges them to begin looking for patterns and write a simple formula to estimate the 10th number. This is an excellent, engaging and fun way to see children working at greater depth level and how they apply their skill of reasoning. The challenge asks children to make a straw house and then estimate how many are needed for a street of 10. They are extended to look at rockets and create their own straw challenge for others to complete. Great team building exercise. Can also be used with children working within the expected level if, practical straws are provided alongside a table template.
There are differentiated worksheets on Fractions from working within to Mastery level in maths as well as a powerpoint with success criteria and word problems. There is opportunity for children to practice mental maths with fractions and then move onto word problems. For gifted children in maths, there is opportunity to work on 2 step problems. These activities have been used in a year 2 class to teach Maths for the new curriculum 2016.
Adding and subtracting on a number line including finding the difference. An excellent array of worksheets differentiated according to structured numberline in 5’s 10’s or in 1’s. Can be easily edited to move on to different scales for year 2 e.g. jumping in steps of 3s , 4s or 10s. Children can start from practical resources using bead strings and number lines and then move on to pictorial and abstract form when ready. Very good for EAL learners and SEN learners.
This is a bundle resource designed to be made into a practical Velcro tape folder. Each page has missing boxes that children have to choose the answer which is on the adjacent page. Each page will need to be laminated with Velcro attached to the answers so that children can manipulate the resource practically. It is useful as a pre-teach tool, revision guide or as an early morning work folder. The resource is designed to be an aid to guide independence in maths once the activity has been previously taught in class. There are opportunities for children to match properties of shape, recognise numbers in order, place value recognition, o’clock and half past times, sequencing number, doubles, counting in steps of 2,5,10, arrays with repeated addition, comparing numbers, part- part -whole, bonds to 10, and adding money. Children can work independently in a group during mental oral starter. The game is engaging and allows children to demonstrate their mental maths skills application. Teachers can assess using AFL how children reason their answers whilst playing this game. The game is suitable for year 2 children and it supports mastery maths.

Comparing amounts using < > and = in the context of length , mass and fractions. Children are encouraged to use jottings to solve each side of the equation. They then use the correct symbol to balance the equation. Suitable for year 2 mastery level although the activities are differentiated and easily accessible to all. Year 2 New Maths Curriculum.
This is fun and engaging way to work with money for young children. They can show reasoning with number and application of skills. In this problem solving task children are using money and showing a system. How many different ways can you make the amount using 2 coins. Differentiated for low ability with scaffolding provided and less amount of coins to use. Higher ability to use bigger amount and three coins. Additional money work consolidates number e.g. giving change from an amount using a number line to find the difference (and counting forward from the smallest number). Children working at the expected standard in the new maths curriculum can use a ruler as a substitute for a number line. Suitable for ks1.
Year 1 and 2 Maths Investigation with shape and number
This is a fun, engaging and creative lesson with shape. The lesson has been successfully used to apply knowledge of shapes in a year 2 setting. Children can begin to think of problems systematically. They think of the best way to start, that there is more than one answer, that they can use number doubles and counting on to support them. Children are encouraged to find different ways to make a 9 sided shape family. They need to be secure with properties of simple 2d shapes previously such as sides of regular shapes.
Work can be differentiated by giving children regular or irregular shapes. Very stimulating activity for all learners.
The activity can be easily adapted for both year groups.
Year 2 Maths Number
A bundle of resources to teach place value using practical resources and equipment, and pictures to show what each number represents. The children move onto comparing numbers using < > symbols. They also understand how to compare three given numbers using more than, less than, tens and units .
Finally, the complete number sequences in 2, 3, 5, from any given number forwards and backwards. The resources are differentiated and well organized with graphics and tables to support learning. Most of the resources ask children to explain and reason e.g how they know which number is greater to show they have mastered the skill.
Explore properties of shape through this fun activity. The resources shows how children can make different animals using a tangram template. The children explore how to make an animals with the given 9 shapes and one rule- at least one side of each shape must be touching. After children have had a go, some may find it challenging so they can be shown the animals slide after. This lesson would be suitably linked to growth mind set challenges. There are also slides that show different ways of questioning knowledge about 2d shapes SATs style.
A fun and interesting activity to consolidate adding three numbers including one 2 digit number. Children should have secure prior knowledge of adding mentally using different strategies such as doubling or counting in different steps. The task can be easily differentiated for all abilities. It offers good opportunity for teachers to facilitate the learning whilst watching how children apply learnt skills. They should be encouraged to be resilient, use trial and error and work systematically to find more than one answer. They should demonstrate reasoning skills by explain e.g how they made the total 29 using two shapes only with a value of 5 and 12. This make AFL easier for the teacher. A highly recommended task.
Year 2 Maths Number
Estimating calculations by rounding to the nearest multiple of 10 first. This resource has differentiated activities for children to solve an equation by rounding. They then write a reasoned answer about which answer is the closest. e.g is 12 + 9 closer to 20 or 30? children select 30 and write a sentence e.g 12 rounds down to 10 and 9 rounds up to 10 so 20 is the closest answers.
children working at greater depth have further opportunities to round, reason and also use the > and < sign to select the appropriate answer. This is a challenging activity for all levels. Children will be able to develop fluency with estimating and rounding. They will need a pre-teach lesson about rules of rounding prior to this. Suitable for the new Year 2 curriculum and meeting ITAF standards.
Year 2 Maths number Problems
Partitioning into tens and ones for Greater Depth Reasoning. Here is an example of the problems presented;
Adam thinks 2 tens and 13 ones is greater that 40. Is he right? Explain your answer. Children develop from fluency to reasoning to show greater understanding in this activity.
There are also differentiated resources for SEN to access similar objectives using concrete models and then moving onto pictorial form. Useful for the new maths ITAF statements and evidence for books and moderation. Part of the new national curriculum for maths.

This 25 page resource is excellent to bridge the gaps in children’s book to evidence the maths arithmetic TAF statements. There are differentiated examples for children to work throughout to have sufficient evidence for areas like doubling, simplified expressions, place value, coordination, rounding and estimating, shape, bridging to add and subtract and using the inverse operations.

Year 2 Maths Shape and Space
A powerpoint showing how to make 3d shapes using the faces of 2d shapes. There a vast array of resources including tables to identify properties of shapes to making a net of regular 3d shapes. Be creative and see if you can make a cube net using some of these resources;
spaghetti and marsh mellows or straws and blu tac ,or using construction toys
Children in year 1 should identify how many 2d shape faces they can find on a 3d shape. They should locate shapes in the environment and label them.
In year 2 children will be identifying properties of 3d shapes such as vertices, edges, right faces, number of 2d shapes needed for a net etc. They should also compare one 3d shape with another one and discuss what is same and different.
Year 2 Maths - Numebr with a focus on Division
Learning to divide and share . children solve dividing equally by 2,5, 3, 4, and 10. They use the step count method to help them solve the missing number. This strategy relies on children being good at counting in steps of the above numbers mentioned. They understand how to solve division quickly using this method and can move onto applying it to division with remainders. The powerpoint has clear explanations as to how this method can be used. Very useful in a year 2 setting for all abilities. Children working at greater depth show their reasoning by using the inverse.

Year 2 Division. This is a bundle of resources to teach division with missing numbers. It is suitable after children are secure at step counting to divide or after sharing equally into groups. Once they are secure, they can solve missing numbers. They should use step count to solve the missing number for division or the inverse of multiplication depending on where the missing number is placed. The next step function machine is an excellent plenary to solve another missing number that is presented differently. It is excellent for children working at greater depth.
