A really simple starter that should be the jumping off points for discussion. Loads of numbers with zeroes in. Some needed. Some not. Some COULD be needed (if you’re dealing with currency or bearings etc) A conversation starter.

Quite like this. A little discussion on finding the midpoint, followed by an example problem pair, followed by a very scaffolded exercise followed by an activity where pupils have to look at what’s changed, which I think is quite cool. I used Dr Frost to top off a little bit of practice here, too.

Deals with simplifying two part, three part ratios. Also includes a simplifying ratio colouring in puzzle, with loads of odd and weird ratios to discuss.

Made these as a way of drilling into my students useful facts that they should commit to memory (ie 1/5 = 0.2). Made to be used like old spelling tests. Give out the facts. Students use memory techniques like covering up etc to remember them, Then they can be given a follow up test (included) to see how much they’ve remembered.

Simple one-sheet of questions. The aim of this one is to explicitly talk about doing calculations that do not change the result. ie : multiplying by one, and explicitly linking something like 5/5 to the concept of one.

A collection of 7 starters designed for students to think about things not always explicitly taught. ie Is the result 2 or 1/2 Is the trailing 0 needed? Is a 1 needed?

Factorising quadratics where a = 1 Examples, a guided scaffolded exercise, a regular exercise, some exam questions and a section on factorising to simplify fractional algebra. More than a lesson here, use what you need or choose your starting point.
