Introduction to parallel and series circuits - For non-specialist physics teachers

This is an introduction to parallel and series circuits for non specialist physics teacher. Included with the powerpoint slide is a worksheet, and how to set up the practical, with troubleshooting. The jpeg files are previews of the slides and what the equipment looks like. Great resource for newly qualified science teachers, student teachers and non specialists.

Physics of the Brazuca World Cup Ball

I use this activity with my middle ability year 9 group, but it can be adapted to other abilities. I showed the YouTube video of the Brazuca ad first, as a quick intro. Then the students need to read through the National Geographic article on the Brazuca and attempt to answer the questions. The article and questions should take around 25 mins or so. On the electronic copy of the article, the hyperlinks still work if you want to take it further.
Radiation Doses Activity

Radiation Doses Activity

Activity I do with my GCSE groups on size of doses from sources. I teach in Mexico so the word document mentions figures for Mexico (just change to UK!) Students can graph using Excel or by hand and then compare different doses of radiation. The image is from the website xkcd and is public domain so can be reproduced. Its a big image and needs to be printed in A3 to be readable. If you cannot print it out the weblink is attached. I really welcome feedback, on how I can improve this resource! Thanks!

World Cup Space Race!

(1)
Designed for my school's &'activities week&';. Students should get into groups of 5 or so, and be given a space agency from a country participating in this years world cup. Students need to build a 'lander&' for their country that will allow an egg to survive &';re entry', as well as produce a poster/presentation on the history/achievements of their countries space agency. Students should spend around 1 hour to 1.5 hours on this, including testing time for the lander
Making a Resistor

Making a Resistor

(7)
A practical I do with my year 9 group (but could be adapted for GCSE). We make a basic variable resistor by shading in an area on grid paper using graphite pencils. Then see how resistance is affected with length. I originally got the idea from a video clip I saw on YouTube, the link is attached here. You will need to have digital multimeters to do this, that have a setting to measure resistance. NB: I'm a recently qualified teacher, so constructive comments on my resources and how they can be improved are really welcome! So please leave a comment if you used them! Thanks!
