Students can then quickly cut out the individual triangles. These cards provide information about 4 fictional plants and provide information about the height of the plant, length of root hair cell, number of chloroplasts in each leaf cell, time to grow, yield and other information such as drought tolerance. This is a lesson that is designed to develop higher level thinking on photosynthesis. This could be used at KS3 or GCSE and would fit into a scheme of work where the students have previously covered photosynthesis. In this lesson students are introduced to the thoughts of Thomas Malthus who said that resources (e.g. food) limit the growth of the population. Students are then given a task where they need to compare four plants and decide which plant they would recommend to farmers to grow. They need to justify their choice by referring to data from the sheets - such as saying that plants with longer root hairs will absorb more water and minerals or that plants with a greater density of chloroplasts would photosynthesis at a greater rate (assuming that CO2 etc are not limiting). The video that accompanies this worksheet has a weblink that is provided at the top of the worksheet. The video lasts for 3 minutes and 38 seconds so it is suggested that either the video is regularly paused or shown twice. Keywords and numbers are provided in a wordbook printed on the sheet. Challenge questions prompt students to analyze the digestion system such as why it should have a large surface area. It is suggested that students peer mark their work and AFL can be through the score they achieved or the number of challenge questions answered correctly. These are a series of dingbats that I have created as engaging starter activities. They work really well as a short punchy starter that students answer on whiteboards before the 4 minute song finishes that students hear as they walk in (e.g. Bon Jovi, Olly Murs). The words are keywords that are referred back to in lesson. There are dingbats for KS3, KS4 and KS5 on these topics: photosynthesis, respiration, compounds, hydrocarbons and carbonyls (A level). This is a resource for the OCR GCSE Gateway B3 module designed for an additional class up to grades A and without the challenge expected for triple science. There is a student gap fill for all parts of the module (a copy of the spec is attached for reference - pages 52 to 67). Also included is a heart diagram with labels and 20 marks of exam questions based on respiration and parts of the cell (taken from AQA but relevant to the OCR spec). I will add further revision resources in Easter 2014.

This is a graded task on the heart and circulatory system in format of a level assessed task used at KS3. There are graded keywords for students to use as well as clear graded objectives taken from the OCR Gateway B3 biology specification (current for 2013/14). This is a level assessed task (LAT) that is used to check progress at the end of a year 8 scheme of work on inheritance and variation. The homework task on IVF and designer babies set a week before the LAT forms the research for the LAT in the classroom. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

This is a 2 part lesson sequence for B1 biology where in lesson 1 students research what diabetes and hypothermia are. They they then create a PowerPoint presentation to explain what homeostasis is and what causes these 2 diseases. In lesson 2 they complete their presentations plus present to the class. Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

This is a lesson plan for an ICT research skills lesson on the history of the cell. 2 timelines are given - one easy and one that is more challenging. Students present their research at the end of the lesson. Alternatively they could present their findings in a second lesson.
