This is a comprehensive set of lesson resources that I have created for form lesson time. The lessons begin with the PowerPoint that introduces a brief history of ethics (religion, Socrates, Kant) then gets students to consider what we mean by the term 'ethics'. A definition is provided. The teacher then goes through how the presentations will be structured and tips for giving a good quality presentation. Students then select which one of the 21 questions they would like to investigate using the sources that have been carefully provided. Many of these sources I have come across (e.g. the Sports Gene, James Mitchell). Others I have had to research. Websites links are provided. Students then plan their presentations and present for 3 to 5 minutes. There is a checklist that can be used to provide feedback. The pictures used are not under copyright protection.

These is a set of resources that I developed for my GCSE and A level students to help them structure their revision. This will help to reduce stress levels and my improve exam performance. Each day of the week is broken down into seven sections. These could be seven hours or seven half hours, depending on how much time the student wants to spend revising in one go. Revision tips are provided at the bottom of the calendar. A example revision schedule is provided for students to have a look at.

This is a copy of a 10 minute presentation on personal learning checklists that I gave at the Science Done Right conference at the Open University in Milton Keynes in March 2017. The presentation starts by talking about a 2014 OECD report on teaching that shows that 20% of teachers in the UK work over 60 hours per week and yet schools can still be improved. It moves on to talk about the Shanghai mastery method of teaching Mathematics where all students understand a topic before a class moves on. Personal learning checklists allow teachers to check that students thoroughly understand a topic before sitting an exam. The Excel document is for teachers to use to check that students understand a topic. The Word document is handed out to students so that they can check their own understanding as they progress through a topic. These can easily be modified. The names in the Excel document are fictional but the results are real.

This is a presentation that I gave to colleagues at a TeachMeet event on using Socrative as an ICT assessment for learning tool. This presentation provides 8 tips for teachers on how to effectively use Socrative in their classrooms.

There are two resources - an example lesson and a tube map slide that is easy to modify. This is a student friendly alternative way of sharing learning outcomes with students at the start of lesson and assessing their learning at the end. The first slide can be shown to the students. Each tube line represents a different part of the lesson. The learning outcomes start easier and then become more challenging as the lesson progresses. The second slide can be printed and used as a personal learning checklist for the lesson and as an assessment for learning tool. Students rate their confidence on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 is low and 5 is high. They can share this score with the teacher using their fingers. They write this score in the left of the two boxes at the start and in the right of the two boxes after a learning activity.

This is is an introductory lesson on atomic structure for High School Chemistry that begins with a fun film characters elements starter. There is then a discussion on how elements are made in supernovae. Students then consider rules for naming compounds and how to write formulae. They then then write the formulae for 12 substances. The challenge is to write empirical formulae. The lesson concludes with a consideration of how some of the chemicals are harmful to fish such as Nemo. Titanium dioxide in suntan cream causes water and oxygen in seawater to react to form hydrogen peroxide that is toixc to fish. Answers are included.

This is an independent learning lesson on alloys for High School Chemistry. It is designed to promote independent learning and higher level thinking through role play, designing an aeroplane and justifying the choice of metals used by using data from a data table. The lesson starts by getting students to think about what three properties metals used to make the worlds fastest jet engined plane (SR-71 Blackbird) would need. Students could be shown a short video from YouTube to prompt their thinking and write their answers on post-it notes. They they then discuss what alloys are and could be asked identify the alloys in the metal trump cards pack (this would need to be printed in advance). They are then introduced to the 4 person role play task where they design an aeroplane. Limit their on this task to around 20 minutes. At the end they could either present their work or answer the 6 mark exam question at the end of the lesson. There is a student-friendly marking grid provided. The lesson menu is available for weaker students. Please look carefully at each of the resources provided before the lesson and decide which ones would best suit your group and length of lesson. This is a thoroughly planned lesson on the production of ethanol by fermentation of glucose and hydration of ethene. It has differentiated resources and a variety of activities and exam question plenaries to check student understanding. There is an optional production of ethanol practical that could be included in this lesson or as a separate lesson. Students start by recalling the formulae for different substances then learn the symbol equations for the two methods of ethanol production. They then carry out a literacy activity where they sort the advantages and disadvantages of each method of ethanol production. The lesson concludes with an exam question plenary. The practical could be included before comparing the advantages and disadvantages of hydration versus fermentation.

These are thoroughly differentiated resources designed for a Senior High School Chemistry lesson on reduction of carbonyl compounds. Objectives are framed as learning questions and graded C to A. There are clear AFL plenaries using mark schemes. There is a graded Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz for an end plenary. The starter is an engaging scents demo using butanal (pleasant) and butanoic acid (rancid butter). Pace and student effort is the key to delivering an outstanding lesson using these resources. Mark schemes can be printed.

This is a Senior High School Chemistry lesson on advanced titration calculations for a very able class. It walks students through the steps in carrying out a back titration for weakly soluble bases.
