This is a GCSE graded task sheet on earthquakes, tsunami, P and S waves designed for independent learning. Students play the role of a geological scientist working for company that is designing an earthquake detection system. They need to put 10 detectors around Japan and explain as part of a Dragons Den pitch how they can detect a tsunami. There are differentiated websites provided for research. This is a loop game made of 18 separate questions to help revise and understand acid, base and pH calculations as part of A level chemistry - for example in OCR A Chemistry module F325. This makes for an engaging plenary in lesson. I write the equations up on the left of the white board as they are read out and refer back to them in lesson. This is a worksheet on applying the work done formula (work done = force x distance) with questions and answers. It uses formula triangles to make the content accessible for lower ability students. The final two questions are more challenging as students need to convert from kiloNewtons to Newtons. The conversion is given at the bottom of the sheet. This is an AS Chemistry lesson on determining the oxidation number of an element in a compound. The starter is a very engaging potassium dichromate volcano where students describe what is happening (e.g. thermal decomposition). The demo must be done in a fume hood and CLEAPPS safety advice should be considered. Instructions for this practical are on the Royal Society for Chemistry website. The sts version of the lesson is printed 2 slides per page. The lesson has animated answers that show a careful step by step calculations so that weaker students are able to access the content. This is a personal learning checklist created for AS chemistry to check understanding of mole calculations. A comprehensive list of AS mole calculations is provided. Students identify what they can do after a lesson or homework as they progress through a topic. At the end both the student and teacher sign to say that the student can complete do these tasks. This is a lesson that works with a very able top set double science GCSE, triple science GCSE or AS chemistry. The levels are based on AS so these may need to be increased if this lesson is to be used at GCSE. The SAS video is played from 2 minutes 30 to around 5 minutes for the starter activity. The Top Gun theme tune could be used as an activity timer. Exam questions are from Edexcel AS chemistry unit 1 but work equally well for GCSE. This is a lesson menu that I have designed initially for low ability pupils (levels 3 to 5) but then extended to higher ability (levels 3 to 6). It complements LOs. It can be easily modified for all lessons.

This is a how science works level assessed task aimed at levels KS3 levels 3 to 7. This assesses the learning of global warming and renewable resources by getting students to design a car for the future that reduces carbon dioxide emissions. I use this as part of a year 8 scheme of work. The word document can be used to edit the LAT and then save it as a JPEG file that is pasted into PowerPoint. The aim of this ticklist is to help students stay focused and help teachers highlight what is going well as the lesson progresses.Each day one lesson is selected to use this ticklist in - starting with subjects where the student has been particularly poorly focused.This should work particularly well for students such as those who are autistic who need to visualise their behaviour. The updated version leaves space for positive comments to be made in the lesson. This resource can be given to the student by teachers, their tutors or support staff. This is a graded task sheet designed for independent working. There is differentiation by keyword, website and task. All students make an advert explaining how the materials work and bright and capable students can design their own materials. The grade A website is very detailed and provides stretch and challenge up to A* so students need to be selective in what they read. This is a set of 16 flashcards with questions and answers that are printed double sided. When printed this way the questions and answers align correctly. I have used Mac mind mapping software MyThoughts to design a visual mind map for foundation Maths GCSE. There are 4 main categories: Shape, Number, Graphs and Algebra. Each category has branches - these are by no means exhaustive but do cover the main topics. Pupils can annotate it with pictures and equations from memory - e.g. as a starter. Alternatively they can put their confidence level next to each branch - as a happy/ neutral/ sad face or as a score out of 10. This can be printed clearly in black in white and displayed in the classroom as colour.

This is a BRAVO reward points chart. Students stick the second A4 slide in their books. BRAVO stands for Book presentation, Reaching out for extension work, Avoiding behaviour points, Verbal contribution and responsibility, Outstanding work. This can be incorporated as part of an established school reward and behaviour system. The class teacher may reward students every 20 points using a phone call home, postcard or any other strategy. This is a Who wants to be a millionaire? quiz for the AQA C1.3 GCSE metals topic that will suit all exam boards. There are 'tip' boxes on the answer pages that elaborate on answers to develop student understanding.
