Edexcel A level Chemistry Grade Boundaries 2013

This is a PowerPoint that I share with AS students so that they are aware of the grade boundaries. I use percentage equivalents to grade work that is handed in. It is worthwhile bringing to students attention that AS boundaries are lower than A2 despite the increasing challenge in A2.

These is a set of resources that I developed for my GCSE and A level students to help them structure their revision. This will help to reduce stress levels and my improve exam performance. Each day of the week is broken down into seven sections. These could be seven hours or seven half hours, depending on how much time the student wants to spend revising in one go. Revision tips are provided at the bottom of the calendar. A example revision schedule is provided for students to have a look at.

A level carbonyl oxidation lesson applied to scents

(0)
This is a lesson designed as part of the Edexcel A2 unit 4 scheme of work on carbonyl compounds. In this lesson students can carry out a practical (grade C) to compare the oxidation of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols. The oxidation and distillation of a primary alcohol is demonstrated. Students then develop their understanding (grade B) by considering which type of oxidant would be best to oxidise geraniol (rose scent) to germinal (lemon scent). Geraniol could be used in the demo. The grade A task is writing organic redox half equations. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Photosynthesis lesson - develop higher level thinking - deciding which plant to feed the world

(0)
This is a lesson that is designed to develop higher level thinking on photosynthesis. This could be used at KS3 or GCSE and would fit into a scheme of work where the students have previously covered photosynthesis. In this lesson students are introduced to the thoughts of Thomas Malthus who said that resources (e.g. food) limit the growth of the population. Students are then given a task where they need to compare four plants and decide which plant they would recommend to farmers to grow. They need to justify their choice by referring to data from the sheets - such as saying that plants with longer root hairs will absorb more water and minerals or that plants with a greater density of chloroplasts would photosynthesis at a greater rate (assuming that CO2 etc are not limiting). There is a newspaper template with boxes that students fill in using information from the website links. The NSB website is a website that provides symbol equations (very challenging). The Doncaster website is a lot easier to read and understand. I will later add a lesson PowerPoint and keywords glossary.
