I am an Assistant Head Teacher in my current school with responsibility for leading writing and assessment. In the past I have led on many subjects, including reading, phonics, PE and RE. This 4-5 week unit of persuasive writing is based around the book ‘The Curse of the Maya.’ It links perfectly with the Ancient Maya Civilisation topic. It includes 4-5 weeks of writing planning based around the book and the children eventually write a leaflet to persuade people to visit Guatemala and a persuasive letter to the British government. The planning includes grammar, spellings, teaching and outcome which is differentiated as needed for greater depth and SEND children. It also includes all of the resources I have made myself. Unfortunately, I cannot include resources such as the smartboards due to copyright, but if you buy this resource and you want them, then just leave your email address in a review and I can send them over to you.

This is an English 4 week unit of work based on the book ‘Wonderscape’ for the last half-term for year 6. It is focused around transition activities and planned in the way that children will learn English at secondary school. It includes starters, spellings, main teaching, differentiated activities and plenaries. There are some resources included. I have smartboards for each unit but I can’t upload them due to copywrite. This resource is based around the following pages from the book Young, Gifted and Black: Mary Seacole, Matthew Henson, Ava Duvernay, Bessie Coleman, Barack and Michelle Obama, George Washington Carver and Malorie Blackman. It is 5 days of reading based around the following skills: fluency, vocabulary, retrieval and inference. The resource includes answers and a differentiated version for lower ability children, which has snippets of the text of it to support these children in reading. This is a week’s worth of reading activities based around Act 1, Scene 1 of the Tempest. The work is based around 5 days of activities around the reading skills - fluency, vocabulary, retrieval and inference and includes a mini-comprehension at the end. I have also included a lower ability version for children who might struggle with this which has snippets of the text included to support.

This is a whole English lesson on the perfect progressive tense, aimed at year 6. It includes a smartboard with definitions and worked examples and a worksheet to practice this tense with answers and a differentiated sheet for children working below the year group. It’s hard to find anything on the internet for this part of grammar which is why I created it! I have also exported and uploaded the smartboard as a PDF in case your do not have notebook software.

This English unit of work runs over 6 weeks and is based around the book ‘Stories from the Silk Road.’ It is the best way that I have found to enliven the topic ‘Islamic Civilisations’ and ensure that children learn deeply about it and this year, we taught it online, so it works well remotely. The plans include starters, main teaching, activities and differentiation, and I have uploaded all of the worksheets that I made to go alongside the unit. This powerpoint trains staff how to teach children to read fluently and explores what it takes to be a fluent reader, including the end of year expectations for years 2 and 6. It has ideas for activities that staff can do to help children become fluent readers, including a punctuation game. It also goes through what a greater depth reader looks like and shows staff how to write questions for greater depth readers and stretch and challenge them. There is also a bit at the end about the explicit and implicit teaching of vocabulary.

This is a knowledge organiser for World War II. It includes a basic timeline, key vocabulary, leaders and a map of the allies and axis (I’ve had to delete the image as I don’t own it but it’s easy to find one on the internet!). I’ve also uploaded a differentiated one for SEND children. This can be used as an assessment guide, but also for parents and children to learn some basics about WWII at home.

This is a full medium term plan for sewing worry monsters. It could serve as Art or DT. The plan includes full lessons; differentiation for extending greater depth children and supporting SEND children; activities to complete; learning objectives and ideas for how to sew the worry monster. It’s a great activity for year 5/6 children when they first move into their new year group and it’s something they can keep.

This is a 3 lesson unit based around religious scripture. Children explore scripture from different religious such as the 10 Commandments and the 5 precepts of Buddhism and explore how these rules help religious people to live. They then create their own precepts and words of wisdom from what they have learnt. There is also opportunity for children to research the lives of religious people such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and explore how they put their beliefs into action.

A unit of art - 3/4 lessons long based around the title ‘Who I am.’ Children learn how to sketch self-portraits using photos of themselves; practice printing using different medium and work on their colour mixing and pairing skills. This culminates in a multi-media piece whereby they use all of their skills to create a picture of themselves with a layered background of 2 tone colours and prints with their self-portrait. This links well to PSHE and to the book Wonder.

This is a 5 week block of planning based around the book Wonder. It includes writing a diary entry and letter, based on the experiences of Auggie within the book. Planning includes the resources used, grammar starters, main teaching and activities, and differentiation for the more able and SEN pupils. There is development time and reading before writing to enable children to write in the style of August. Great for informal writing and capturing the writer’s voice.

Full set of planning for writing horror stories based on the graphic novel and the novel Silverfin (young bond) by Charlie Higson. Fully differentiated with starters that link to grammar and resources to go with the lessons. The unit explores the features, language and structure of horror stories using the text and then culminates in the children writing their own horror story using the first few pages of the graphic novel Silverfin. Especially great for getting reluctant boys engaged!

A great resource for sending home to parents of children who are studying The Islamic Civilisation. Gives them a timeline and background information on some of the most important people from this era. It also has key vocabulary from this topic with definitions on it. Great resource to start off the topic.
