A fully planned, resourced and ready to teach scheme of work for War Poetry, aimed primarily at Year 8 (but can be adapted to suit Year 9). Included is a unit overview, weekly lessons plans, a PowerPoint to accompany each lesson as well as all resources needed (differentiated ones included). The unit looks at many different poems from Who’s for the Game? and Disabled to In Flanders Field, Suicide in the Trenches and Dulce et Decorum Est Blessing as well as the causes of WW1, use of propaganda, trenches, life as a soldier and the Christmas Truce. All lessons cover reading, writing and spoken language skills and also includes a writing assessment and a reading assessment (comparison essay).

To help pupils recap key word classes in preparation for the SPAG test, I have created a simple PPT where pupils are given a sentence and then must label each word with its word class as well as identifying what type of sentence it is. It has proved extremely useful as a quick starter to a grammar lesson.
