New Zealand Essential Spelling Lists - cards
New Zealand Essential Spelling Lists 1-8.
5 words on each card.
Can be used in a multitude of ways in your classroom.
Suggestions for use:
♦ Spelling activities (eg alphabetical order, words in sentences).
♦ Word study (eg how many syllables, how many vowels).
♦ Handwriting (The font on the cards is ‘NZ basic script’).

Activity sheets for learning about capital letters, full stops and question marks. The sentences contain high frequency sight words so they are suitable for junior students (early readers).
Activities:

New Zealand Essential Spelling Words - 'Unscramble it' mats
A fun, interactive activity for your students to practise their spelling words.
Print and laminate the mats. Students use alphabet letters such as magnetic letters, scrabble tiles, letters written on milk bottle lids or pieces of card. They gather the letters they need and manipulate them until they see the word.
Words used: NZ Essential Spelling Words lists 1-8 (list 8 = commonly misspelt words).
2 Different Formats:
♦ With a prompt – a dot under the starting letter
♦ Without a prompt
69 ‘Unscramble it’ mats in total
Just print the mats that suit the level of your students:
♦ List 1 – 2 mats
♦ List 2 – 4 mats
♦ List 3 – 6 mats

Answer sheets are not provided. If you can’t work out what the word is (particularly some of the longer words in list 7 and 8) just look at the starting letter and refer to a copy of the essential spelling list.
Please note that when making some of the longer words, the letter tiles will not fit in the allocated space on the page. These longer words will spread out onto the table/floor. Also, there are two words in List one that are only 1 letter long (a and I) so these will not require unscrambling.

A creative way to present some poetry on war remembrance days such as:

Write the acrostic poem in the square and then cut it out. Fold the pocket template and glue the poem in centre, under the flaps.
Template Options:

New Zealand Sight Words – Mystery Word Cards
Mystery Sight Words! Students work out the starting letter of each image and place an alphabet manipulative underneath it to work out the secret word. A great hands-on activity that supports both reading and spelling of high frequency words.
Use alphabet manipulatives such as magnetic letters or letters written on milk bottle lids. Alternatively your students could ‘write and wipe’ the letters with a whiteboard marker (laminate first).

New Zealand Essential Spelling Words - 'Roll, Read, Write' activity
NZ Essential Spelling Words from Lists 1-8
An fun activity to practise spelling words.
How it works:
This activity can be done independently or in a group with others. Each person has one sheet of paper with words from the spelling list they are currently working on. Students take turns to roll the dice, read the word that matches the dice number, and write the word in the column underneath. There are 9 spaces under each word.
Students can either:
Roll - read - write
Or
Roll - read - cover - write
A blank template is also included, enabling you to customise the spelling words for your students.
The font used is ‘NZ Basic Script’. The letter shapes are the same as those recommended in the NZ Ministry of Education Handbook – ‘Teaching Handwriting’. This enables your students to work on their spelling and handwriting at the same time!

Dolch Words – Fun Activity - Hot Laps Racing Track
An engaging sight word activity …. particularly for your boys.
Build a racing track and drive a toy car along it, reading the sight words as you go.
This resource contains all 220 Dolch words. They are grouped in the following categories:
♦ Pre-primer
♦ Primer
♦ First Grade
♦ Second Grade
♦ Third Grade
Provided in the following formats:
♦ Letter size paper
♦ A4 size paper
The Dolch words are written on a piece of ‘racing track’. Print them off, laminate, and cut. Use as many pieces as you wish and combine them with the corners, starting grid and finishing line. Your students can design their very own racing track!
You can use this resource to make up all sorts of games and activities. For example …
* Make a racing track that is in the form of a loop. Roll a dice and travel that many spaces along the race track, reading the sight words as you go. Every time you pass the finishing line (chequered squares or flags) you score one point. Who can score 10 points first?
* As above, but when you land on a word you count how many letters it has. You say the word out loud that many times. For example, if you land on the word ‘little’ you say it 6 times.
* The teacher (or a buddy) says a word. Drive your car to that word.
* The teacher (or a buddy) gives a clue to a word. Drive your car to that word. For example, drive your car to a word that starts with b and ends with k. Or, drive your car to a 3 letter word that rhymes with ‘man’.
A different racing track layout can be built each time. Great for your creative learners!

♦ Track pieces with one Dolch word written on each.

Each card contains 6 words that begin with a common blend, digraph or trigraph.
