Story Starters for writing lessons in the classroom. Hand them out (or children can 'lucky-dip'). Students can then choose which story starter interests them the most and use that one to begin writing in their exercise book. New Zealand Handwriting/Printing Copy Cards The font used is the 'New Zealand Basic Script'. The letter shapes are identical to those recommended in the NZ Ministry of Education Handbook - ‘Teaching Handwriting’. Students look at the card and copy one line of each letter/word into their exercise book. The last word on each card is a place in New Zealand. A suggestion is for early finishers to locate the place on a map. A great way to cover literacy and numeracy at the same time. The graphs progress in difficulty: At the Magenta level students are only working with a few words on a simple 5x4 graph. A great activity that supports oral language development. Toss a coin and then roll a dice to find a topic to talk about. Talk to a buddy, small group or whole class. Can you talk continuously for 30 seconds without pausing or saying ummm, ahhhh, etc? 6 charts with 12 topics on each card (72 topics altogether) 1 chart with 12 topics that are broader (suitable for less able students). Fun, engaging topics that your students will enjoy. Provided in colour and in black and white. A blank template is also provided so you and your students can make up your own game. Also provided is the list of topics that you can print, cut up and put in a container. Students can then pull a topic out from the container (as an alternative to tossing a coin and rolling a dice).

Celebrate the Māori New Year with this writing/art activity. Write a haiku poem on the feather template. Add colour and cut it out. Join the class feathers together to make a korowai (Māori cloak).
