This resource is a set of reading comprehension worksheets for the dystopian short story There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury. It is created for both ESL/ EAL and First language students, and was made originally to be part of a literature component for IBDP HL Language B English (but can be used for other curricula/ levels). The resource includes introductory activities, vocabulary activities and questions leveled by difficulty. Enjoy!
The Uplingo team loves variations of the English language, and in this resource we decided to develop a lesson to practice all 4 skills around the topic of Singaporean English (Singlish). This fits well into the theme of IBDP Language B: Language Variation (Identities) but it can also work with any EAL/ ESL class, to open your students eyes to different types of Englishes! The activity includes the following:
Context setting group work activity where students divide into four teams to find out a different aspect of Singapore. They then present to the class.
Pre-listening activity# 1 : Students work with a partner to translate given Singlish terms into standard English
Active listening # 1: Students listen to a video to see if their Singlish translations were correct.
Individual reading activity: Students go to a BBC article to answer questions on Singlish
Active listening # 2: Students listen to an Open University video (Singlish Controversies) and listen for opinions/ attitudes towards Singlish.
Debate: Students divide into 5 teams to debate a motion on banning Singlish
Suggested writing tasks on Singlish

The Uplingo team believes strongly that the best way to improve listening skills is for students to first engage in fun activities related to the listening, and then to create a reason for listening. This resource includes a staged worksheet with the following sections:
Context setting activity- pair work about languages and a team game on global languages.
A mind map activity where students brainstorm what they know about English
Vocabulary matching activity
Team work game/ active listening activity: Guess the answers to the questions then listen to see if they are correct.
Reflection activity on the English language and the predicting activity
A post listening reading activity: students find points for and against English as a global language
Discussion on English as a global language - using formal discussion sentence starters
Suggested writing tasks for English as a global language

Please make a copy available to your students for this activity.

This resource comes as a set of PNG files and as a PDF. It is a set of persuasive techniques, with definitions and examples, for A RIPE FOREST. It’s for use with first or second language speakers, and can be used for many different types of persuasive writing.
This resource contains introductory activities, prediction activities, questions, and some writing activities for An Astrologer’s Day by R.K. Narayan. This story is not included in the pack; however, it can be found on the Internet. This story can be read as part of the theme of Identities, and it ties in well if you are looking at contemporary issues such as scammers, people with fake identities, or people who disguise their true selves. This resource makes no overt reference to English B; however, there are questions which are similar to those found on Paper 2: reading. There are also critical thinking questions about how the writer uses language, and the effect created which will introduce students to skills they will need for the HL oral. Even though there is no literature component in SL, we at Uplingo believe that students of all language acquisition levels benefit from studying literature; therefore, if you have a stronger SL cohort then you can give this story a try.
