Science in the news

(0)
This is an activity suitable for a lesson or as a piece of homework. It is designed to develop literacy and promote an interest and awareness in science. The students find a science based news story published in the last 7 days that they find interesting. They pick out keywords and find definitions for them. They research additional information and summarise the story in their own words.
Displacement reactions (Experiment worksheet)

Displacement reactions (Experiment worksheet)

(0)
A worksheet for a practical chemistry experiment where students investigate displacement reactions. Using a spotting tile, students react combinations of metals and salt solutions, then idntify which ones have reacted. They then compare their results to the reactivity series and try to write word equations for what the have seen.
Balancing chemical equations - Molymod activity

Balancing chemical equations - Molymod activity

(5)
This is an activity to help students visualize chemical reactions using molymod kits. The students build the reactants, then break the bonds and reassemble the atoms into the products. Helps them visualize it so they can balance the equations. There is a worksheet and colour guide to how to build the atoms from the kit.
Risk assessment - Short activity

Risk assessment - Short activity

(10)
A short activity to introduce students to a risk assessment. They are given 6 hazards, they then have to use the labels to fill in the risk assessment table. Suitable for use as a starter or plenary.
Elements and compounds - Molymod activity

Elements and compounds - Molymod activity

(29)
Written for AQA C1 - Atoms, elements and compounds. But can be used at KS3. Print in colour on A3. Students need Molymod kits, the worksheet directs them to build different models of molecules and identify if they are elements or compounds.
Naming organic molecules dominoes

Naming organic molecules dominoes

(0)
A 10 minute activity where students match names of organic molecules to their skeletal, structural or full structural formula. Useful as an introduction to organic chemistry or as revision.
The rate equation
WonderCalibanWonderCaliban

The rate equation

(21)
These are a series of activities leading the students through, methods of following a rate of reaction, finding the initial rate, rate orders, the rate equation and half lives of reactants.
The Rock Cycle Card sort activity
WonderCalibanWonderCaliban

The Rock Cycle Card sort activity

(0)
These are 12 picture cards each describing a different stage of the rock cycle. They can be cut out and arranged by the students. Could be a 15 minute activity on its own, or could be a longer activity if you ask the students to use the cards as a basis for making their own poster.
Enthalpy cycles

Enthalpy cycles

(2)
This worksheet covers enthalpy cycles. It focuses on enthalpy of combustion, formation and reaction. Born-Haber cycles.
AQA C1-Picture revision quiz
WonderCalibanWonderCaliban

AQA C1-Picture revision quiz

(8)
50 picture based questions based on the AQA C1 unit. The picture questions are stuck up around the room and the students tour the room with their quiz sheet and answer the questions.

Word and symbol equations - carousel of 6 experiments

(1)
This is a worksheet which supports a carousel of 6 experiments where students add reagents in test-tubes and make observations. They then use scaffolding on the sheet this to build word and symbol equations. They are then challenged to balance the equations and add state symbols. This is intended as a 20-30 minute activity to help students develop skills in creating equations based on reactions.
Investigating the Rate of Reaction project

Investigating the Rate of Reaction project

(0)
This is an investigation into the effect changing the concentration of hydrochloric acid has on its rate of reaction with magnesium. This is intended as a short project over several lessons to get students used to some of the factors needed in an investigation write-up. Includes student investigation sheet, mark scheme and grading information. The mark scheme is written with the students in mind, the intention is to give it to them with the student guide to encourage them to get maximum marks and or as a tool for peer-assessment.
Understanding atomic spectra - card sort

Understanding atomic spectra - card sort

(0)
These are slides which can be printed and given to the students as cards for a 10 minute card sort activity to support a lesson on atomic spectra. It helps them understand atomic emission and absorption spectra in terms of adsorption and emission of photons by the electrons in an atom. Included is a pdf with 4 cards on each page and the original PowerPoint from which they were made.
Rate of reaction - graph drawing activity

Rate of reaction - graph drawing activity

(0)
In this activity students draw a graph modelling the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Then sketch and explain how the curve changes with increasing concentration, a catalyst and increasing temperature.

Titration investigation-Power station emissions

(0)
The aim of this experiment is to use results of a titration to perform a calculation linked to a real life example of measuring sulphur dioxide emissions from a power station. The scenario is that students are given a solution of sulfuric acid produced when waste gas from a power station is bubbled through hydrogen peroxide. They perform a titration the sulfuric acid against a known solution of sodium carbonate then use the results to calculate the mass of sulfur dioxide in the waste gas. Included in the PowerPoint is an introduction to the experiment, teachers notes, results table, instructions for students, advice on performing titrations and how to do the calculations. Depending on the group, different levels of support can be given.
