AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - AO2 Language Analysis Revision Session

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - AO2 Language Analysis Revision Session

(1)
This session covers language analysis - briefly - and guides through a triangulated answer using an older Use for a quick practice session or as an intro session to analysing language with a greades 4-5 (level 3) mark scheme. There is also a Guided Triangulation Worksheet. It helps train students to triangulate and embed their evidence and link all 3 quotations to the same main point. Writing more sophisticatedly as a result, they will gain more marks as it will be more perceptive than a standard set of PEE paragraphs… There is also an example answer but focused on a different text. I find it best not to use a direct example. Some just copy and paraphrase but with this, they really have to confront the difference as well; it also shows a good detailed paragraph. Hope you find it useful! Please leave some feedback either way.

AQA 8700/2 GCSE English Language Revision Cards - Paper 2

These cover Paper 2 and have a range of texts and questions covering all P2 AOs. There are 2 sets of cards for Reading and 1 set for Writing. 16 mini extracts 32 reading questions 16 example statements for Persuasive Writing. 6 sets of TEQ example answer paragraph cards. There is also a second set of reading cards - which have been coloured to match each individual P2 set, using the block colours allows for quite a sophisticated matching task. Rainbow cards allow for quicker access with easy matching and are much better for lower level learners. The reading cards can be double-sided but single-sided allows for more simultaneous use. Best to laminate them and reduce the risk of wear and tear. A detailed collection for Paper 1 is also in my shop!

Use the Rainbow sets in drop-in sessions, as a fresh set of unseen questions for your students to practice with. Alternatively, use in timetabled sessions in the block colour versions and use group work to match the question cards to the extract cards as a brain-warming starting exercise; familiarising them with each question type, and AO, in the process. AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - AO2 The Pearl - Synthesising Connotations

A short session based on the text extract from Summer 2022. This is a simple session encouraging the synthesis of connotations and is designed to be paperless. It’s fully animated and has a short summary video at the start. Key word analysis is a feature and there’s a demo answer + 2 extra questions. There are a number of book covers, set as small images in the centre of white pages. I printed these laminated and passed them round/got the students into groups with drywipe pens. They can be used in a few ways.

Alert Video Embedded Within the Title Slide - Resources cover SENSITIVE ISSUES… Be sure to gain consent and warn students before use…the video will help with that! This is great for anti-bullying week and will certainly make students think and provide ample natural opportunities for discussion… This is detailed, animated set covers AQA 8700 - Paper 1 Section A - Reading and includes example responses, differences between Language & Structure, Prep’ tasks and exam-style tasks for Questions 1 - 4 from Paper 1. This is a fantastic story to use and provides a great opportunity to promote an open culture in which people are encouraged not to be afraid of asking for help or voicing their concerns or opinions. Serious issues are brought to light via interesting and thought-provoking tasks on language analysis, structural analysis and evaluation. I left Q5 because it was hard enough reading a few hundred stories about abandoned animals in the Summer 2019 paper. I couldn’t face it so there is a homework task slide to link to Q5. It could be used to introduce or revise Sec. A because it assumes some knowledge but has some detail, also. It also has timers and mark schemes and anything required for tasks in a handout.
AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 Structure Pack

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 Structure Pack

9 Resources
This set of Structural Analysis sessions spans a number of lessons and goes into some depth for the latter part of AO2. There are some basics about structure and some stretch & challenge terms and examples of every kind of embedded media there is. The intertextuality lesson is one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve used as it demonstrates how it is a feature that is all around us. Imagine what your students could have said for this with the 2019 Summer paper 1 - Protagonist ‘Alice’ and all the sophisticated links to the metaphorical rabbit hole she ventures down… There is also a lesson for Halloween on AO2 but both language and structure to help with the difference. Also, check out the totally free Global Warning lesson I’ve added to my shop which would complement this pack. Grab Yourself a Bargain NOW!

This has been created on Microsoft Whiteboard, which is an awesome online teaching tool. TES doesn’t support high-quality SVG images, so there is a link to download from Google - for which you need your own personal Google account. Zoom into the mid-section and the arrown guide to a sample answer, extra tasks/questions and contextual information.

A fully animated, step-by-step, click-by-click presentation with matching handout. There are many resources for A02 but this particular session is packed with animated annotations, activities and a summative task. It also has a rather interesting topic and the pink is striking on the larger screen. Also includes is a Fast & Furious Starter Task and some language feature revision which is easily replaced with your own slide. There is also a scaffold worksheet - based only on the title - should some students struggle to reach the level of detail required.

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - AO2 Language & Structure Analysis Pack

12 Resources
Begins with a very perceptive and in-depth analysis introduction, encouraging and guiding students through finding patters and triangulating evidence, for more detailed paragraphs. Goes into some great detail and looks at Language Analysis for both AO2 questions: Paper 1 Question 2/ and Paper 2 Question 3. There is also a revision guidebook with ppt display and a lesson on the difference between language and structure in time for Halloween! Finally there are two language feature sessions which are very detailed as well - one fictional and one nonfictional.

AQA 8700/2 GCSE English Language - Summary & Comparison - Prisons

I usually use this as either revision or after my nonfiction language feature double session. Download to see how this works! This is a fully animated ppt, with step-by-step/click-by-click animation, animated annotations and example 1/2 answer for paper 2, question 2. Activities and notes prompts, throughout, this AO1-3 session lasts upto 3hrs and covers question 1, 2 and 4 of paper 2. It ends with a prompt for Q4 and leads perfectly into a more detailed comparison session. Explore Victorian ‘Hulk’ ‘floating prisons in 1846 and compare how different the prisons and writers’ perspectives are. A 2011 article is included which is great to compare. Click the Alcatraz image and open a 1934 video of real prison footage. Alcatraz was actually open in the 1800s and the video provides some interesting content.

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - Structural Foreshadowing Grid

Train students to make rational predictions based on fictional expositions, in practice for Paper 1 - Question 3. Begin with a fictional exposition. Then note down all the symbolic ideas within. Following this, make a reasonable prediction about what might be foreshadowed by the writer. FInally, make as many comments as you can about the significance this has to the entire plot and how it will affect the reader via creating interest/intrigue. Foreshadowed clues to future events are in a great many novels…these, like Steinbeck’s famous novella, are often teleological. Writing about them can get some big marks for your students! =-) Take a look at my brief session on this - with another one of these sheets included: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/aqa-8700-english-language-paper-1-question-3-structure-foreshadowing-12124686

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - Evaluation Practice (Bonfire Night)

With a bonfire night theme and an extract from a text about a fire… This fully animated session is meant for a quick 1.5 hour Paper 1 - Question 4 practice. It defines the term: ‘critical evaluation’, goes over strategy for the question, breaks down the level 3 mark scheme (grades 4-5) and provides a timed question and example part-response to it, after their own attempt. The starter is evaluating an image on safety. 2 sided handout means students will have to take some notes if they haven’t already in previous sessions. Can be used to recap and practise or introduce the topic. Special Offer! 44 slide - 5 session set! With a mini extract summary starter using a text which is one of the very first descriptions of fireworks in history, this session ticks all the boxes - literally. It’s very detailed and revisits every question in 8700/2. Revisit language features, develop strategies for writing sophisticated responses and gain confidence with a vast number of tasks. It covers every AO for Paper 2 - with two uniquely researched nonfictional sources and an exam-style paper as part of the handout. Instead of focusing on Guy Fawkes, this one focuses on fireworks themselves and is fully animated with step-by-step-click-by-click animations and annotations. So you can also use it after New Year. Just remove Guy. Example higher level answers for each question are included and mark schemes for level 3 - grades 4-5. Special Offer! Designed for a 1.5hr session in which students revisit figurative features and try to extend them but it could easily be stretched out longer. Starter is a split image with a prompt for half the group to annotate one half and vice-versa. Then share annotations and save for later student-led choice in the final summative task. There is a small, looped video of a burning fire (courtesy of pixabay.com). This helps to prompt vocabulary ideas and loops until stopped or on slide transition. Reminders of adjective/adverb use, as well as a mark scheme for upper level 3 (grade 5) through which you can explain or direct questions to students. Visually impressive and matches my Evaluation Session. Special Offer! This session uses songs to demonstrate shifts in mood/tone and changes in focus. They’re always quite obvious so it’s a good way into the topic. It requires students to research their own set of lyrics but there’s no reason why you can’t print off some popular lyrics, randomly, and take them in with you. There are example annotations and comments and every step is led click-by-click with animation. **Special Offer! **Purchase a resource or bundle, leave a paid review and email a screenshot to me of your receipt with a request for ANY resource in my shop under £5 - FREE.
