Two example diary entries from the point of view of Christophe from the children’s novel Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell.
These exemplar diary entries are perfect to use as WAGOLLs after reading Chapter 1 of the text.
The first model diary entry comes with a feature find worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet. This can be easily edited to vary the challenge level and provide differentiation.

It is based on Chapter 5 of the novel, when Barney speaks to the Snargets in Stig’s cave, but in the example, Stig has the ability to speak English and joins in the conversation. A writing feature identification worksheet, answer sheet and extract from Stig of the Dump are included.
Use the WAGOLL before pupils write their own versions or continue the model text.
This can be used when studying the novel Stig of the Dump or during a stand-alone lesson.

Two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated direct speech. Pupils must look carefully at the direct speech to check if the correct punctuation has been used and if it is all in the correct place.
There are two activities provided:
• Direct Speech Punctuation Cards: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz.
• Direct Speech Punctuation Worksheet: pupils identify whether the speech has been correctly or incorrectly punctuated and then make any necessary corrections. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz.
The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks).
Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including:
• The reporting clause before the direct speech
• The reporting clause after the direct speech
• Two or more sentences of direct speech together
• The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech
• The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech
A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’.
Answers to all tasks are included.

How To Train Your Dragon themed differentiated worksheets containing a variety of possessive apostrophe activities, focusing on Chapters 1, 2 & 3 of the novel.
The possessive apostrophe worksheets are differentiated three ways. They contain a variety of possessive apostrophe activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of possessive apostrophes and improve their skills in using possessive apostrophes in their writing. Pupils are asked to identify singular and plural possessive apostrophes, create possessive phrases, add missing possessive apostrophes and write sentences to include different types of possessive apostrophes.
The worksheet focuses on Chapters 1, 2 & 3 of Cressida Cowell’s popular novel, How To Train Your Dragon, but can be used at any point after reading Chapter 3.
Each worksheet comes with an answer sheet.

Example instructional text based on information from Chapters 22 to 29 of the children’s novel The Twits by Roald Dahl.
This exemplar instructional text “How to Trick the Twits” is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying The Twits. The instructions are based on the trick that Muggle-Wump the monkey plays on Mr and Mrs Twit at the end of the book.
The model instructions come with a feature identification worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class.

Pupils will learn how to write an exciting action sequence with this The Hodgeheg themed example text, together with a feature find and answers, boxing up grid, differentiated planning sheets and text extract.
Pupils start by reading the action writing extract from the children’s book The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith. The structure is then examined using the boxing up method. A new text is planned by modelling the innovation (completed grid provided). Next pupils will analyse the example text using the feature find grid (answers provided) where they will need to find examples of listed action sequence grammar and language features. Lastly, pupils will plan their own action sequence using the differentiated planning grids and then write their own action sequence.

Ideas for action sequences:

An example character profile text about the character Abu Boutros from the children’s refugee novel Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird.
Pupils start by reading the extract from the novel in which Abu Boutros is introduced as a character. They then complete the matching activity, pairing quotes from the text with inferences that can be made about the character.
Pupils then read the exemplar character profile of Abu Boutros to use as a WAGOLL. The model character profile comes with a feature find worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class.
After identifying the features from the example text, pupils write their own character description of Ayesha, Granny, Mrs Zainab, Samar, Latif, Abu Boutros or a character from another book using the differentiated character profile planning and writing templates and character trait word bank (also included).

The quizzes comprise of 15 questions for each of the 5 chapters of the book. That’s a total of 75 questions!
These quizzes are great to use in the following ways:
• To assess understanding of each chapter after reading
• To recap the events of each chapter prior to reading the next one

• As a fun way to end a unit studying The Iron Man
