It then introduces the structure of the German school system and there’s a video from YouTube to watch. It then introduces the vocabulary for lots of areas within a school (e.g. canteen, playground, staff room etc.), and invites students to put these words into simple descriptive sentences. There is then a reading activity and a listening activity to practise this vocabulary. It ends with a written exercise asking students to write about the school they go to. It then recaps two ways to state opinions (“Ich liebe/mag/hasse…” and “Ich finde es…”) before introducing a third way: “am liebsten”/“lieber”/"(gar) (nicht) (sehr) gern". There is then a listening activity based on “Ich finde…” sentences and a video about football. After that is a “spot the mistakes” activity and a conversation to practise in pairs. There is then a translation into English and into German and then information on why giving opinions and reasons is important (in the context of the GCSE mark scheme). There is then an introduction to “weil”, “da”, and “denn” and some practice with a dice game. It ends with a recap of key facts and a short writing exercise to put it together. There are some comprehension activities to see the “favourite” vocab in action, and then information about saying “my”, “your”, “his” and “her”. It is followed by a writing activity for students to practise the new grammar. A 13-slide PowerPoint presentation which starts with a Do Now activity covering German topics covered so far. It starts with a short “hook” video about “Sommerrodeln” and asks students to form their opinion on it. There is then a match-up activity for adventure sports, like mountain biking, white water rafting, canoing etc. There is then a short explanation of the word “man” and “Man kann…” is introduced. Students are asked to form sentences using “man kann”. The four seasons are then introduced and students are asked to put these into more “man kann” sentences. It ends with a creative piece of work, in which students are invited to make a brochure for an adventure centre to practise the “man kann” sentences with adventure sports, plus their opinions. It then introduces five prepositions (“neben”, “zwischen”, “in”, “auf”, and “unter”), and shows students the Dative Case in action with “a”, “the”, and “my”, with a grid to fill in (included). There then follows lots of practice - multiple choice quizzes, and then tasks asking students to form sentences using the Dative Case, prepositions and furniture. There is a drawing activity to show understanding of the words, a fun “Connect 4” activity where students have to translate phrases from this unit into German, and then a written task asking students to describe the position of the bedroom furniture in their room.
