A game to help pupils practice their high frequency keyword spellings.
The first page - the game board - should be blown up to A3 size and I’ve laminated my copy. The keyword pages should be copied onto card and cut up. You will need a dice and a counter for each child playing (my class have used their mini robots that they created as part of our topic work).
A number problem for year 1 children to solve involving triangular numbers.
We had been looking at different methods the children could use to solve number problems, e.g. drawing diagrams, using apparatus, making playdough models, etc.. They worked in pairs or small groups to encourage them to talk about their approach.
The problem is easily differentiated by changing the final number. More able children and those in higher year groups could look at the pattern and think about rules for solving the problem regardless of the number given.
11 session unit of work with a grammar focus of question marks and exclamation marks based on Julia Donaldson's 'Room on the Broom'. Children make their own character puppets and perform a play, generating lots of talk for writing. The planning was created for the Year 1 curriculum but is equally valid for Year 2 work on exclamations, questions and statements.
This resource includes:
- A comprehensive planning document including suggestions for cutaways, pullbacks, guided reading activities and differentiation.
- Room on the Broom planning resources pdf containing writing frames, word mat, introductory activities and keep up activity ideas (all referenced in the planning document).
- Sentence identification activities used in the planning as assessment for learning opportunities.
My class loved making the puppets and doing the puppet show. We performed our shows to small groups of Year R and got feedback from the Year R kids which was lovely. I hope your class enjoy it too!
38 pages of Year 1 place value activities informed by the White Rose mastery document. The pages progress through concrete, pictorial and abstract activities and a teach, practise, apply approach. There are opportunities to practise with smaller numbers (0-10) and also larger numbers up to 100.
A set of loop cards is included which need to be printed double-sided and cut out, as well as cards for a paired activity and plenty of worksheets. Personally, I cut out strips or blocks of the sheet to stick in the child’s book so that their books aren’t full of worksheets and/or half finished work.

This Year 1 unit of maths work is for early on in Year 1. The learning journey focuses on learning to read and write the numbers 1 - 10 in numerals and words as well as counting to 30 forwards and backwards. These numbers are lower than the end of year (EOY) expectations for Year 1 but activities can easily be extended for more able pupils or if you are teaching this unit later in the year.
NC objectives covered:
• Count to and across 30 (EOY = 100), forward s and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1 or from any given number.
• Count, read and write numbers to 50 in numerals.
• Read and write numbers from 1-10 (EOY = 1-20)

Primary school SMSC assembly plan and presentation based on the word ‘Cultural’ and informed by the government’s advice document on promoting fundamental British values as part of Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development in schools.
The assembly helps children to understand the meaning of the words ‘cultural’ and ‘cultural diversity’. They apply the concept to themselves in school first and then extend it to living in the United Kingdom. There is a reflection at the end of the assembly for children to consider our differences, what unites us and how we should challenge discrimination where it arises.

Based on the 2016 interim assessment framework for KS1 mathematics, this form provides additional evidencing of the Working Towards criteria for maths. Useful for children who struggle to record their knowledge.
Year 1 writing frames/scaffolds for our first topic - 'Wish you were here...'
We will be using the 'Holidays - joining with and - writing scaffolds' to practise orally rehearsing sentences including words joined with 'and' before writing them. Moving on from using the scaffold we will be writing sentences about our holiday with more independence.
We'll be using the postcard templates as role-play writing materials but they could be used in a variety of ways including phonics application, early morning work or incorporated into a whole lesson. The postcards include three levels of differentiation.
Bookmark targets cards in a variety of colours and with a range of headings, including a blank space for you to write on your own if preferred. The target cards include a 'Personal Best' box for children/teacher to record their achievement and attempt to improve upon it. E.g. I can use full stops correctly. PB - 5 (full stops used correctly). I've found 'PB's to be very motivating in the past! They also give children a sense of ownership and involvement with their targets.
Three differentiated 'Seaside Snack Shack' menus for addition and subtraction work as well as one-step problem solving involving addition and subtraction, including missing number problems.
The three menus cover objectives as follows:
Menu 1 -
- use number bonds within 10.
Menu 2 -
- use number bonds within 20
- add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0.
Menu 3 -
- solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? - 9.
Comprehensive KS2 unit of work on recounts based around a school trip or school event but could easily be adapted for other recount subject matter. The planning uses Red Nose Day as a model and was originally written for Year 3, also suitable for Year 4.
The unit of 6 lessons follows the composition progression laid out in the National Curriculum - plan, draft and write, evaluate and edit, including proof-reading. Planning includes ideas for cutaway and pullback groups and EAL/SEN activities. All resources required to deliver the unit of work are included in this download. 15 lessons of story writing planning for primary school children! The planning is based around Year 1 curricular objectives but could easily be adapted for other year groups as it is written around the universal themes of

I encouraged my pupils to work systematically, looking for the lowest multiple and working up because those that didn’t were more prone to making errors. I thought they would walk this activity but there was enough challenge in there to keep them interested and engaged. Spotting errors was a good way to check their understanding.

Solve the code to reveal the shape names and match them to the correct shape. Perfect for Key Stage 1/lower Key Stage 2 revision of common 2D and 3D shape recognition and naming. There is an answer key included so that children can mark their own work if desired.

Children write the Easter story in their own keepsake booklet. There are 10 pages for writing on in total, including a reflection page at the end. Each page has simple illustrations for the children to colour and space to write about the Easter story. Print the pdf as is, double-sided, and make sure you tick the ‘flip on the short edge’ option. The booklet will print out in the correct order and you simply need to fold the pages in half.
