These are one step more and less problems that I've been using in Year 1. We're practising the vocabulary of 'more' and 'less' and their association with add and subtract. I'm also doubling up on a bit of "know and recognise the value of different coins." The last three slides require secure understanding and reasoning skills and so are good for extension or mastery/more able work. They ask questions such as: "Stu has 8p. Every week he spends 2p on sweets. How many weeks will his money last for?" Or: 'Amandeep has 2p. Meera has 5p more in her purse. Which coins does Meera have in her purse? Can you draw all the different combinations of coins that Meera might have? I hope you find it useful!

A perfect way to bring an engaging technology activity into your classroom and a fun Halloween freebie! This resource contains a PowerPoint with Halloween-themed images for your children to segment for spelling. Simply download onto a computer, Chrome book or tablet that can display PowerPoints or upload to Google slides for devices connected to the internet, e.g. iPads. Start the slideshow and children write the words on whiteboards or into books. There is a slide at the end where they can check their own work. I know that all sounds a bit complicated but my Year 1 SEN kids use these with independence! This activity is great for Year R work stations, independent cutaways, intervention work, peer tutoring, assessment, morning work or an early finisher task. I use this spreadsheet for my tracking. It includes groups that my school is focussing on and allows you to filter by these groups e.g., Free School Meals, EAL, summer/spring/autumn birthdays, etc.. It will be easy to change the column headings to include groups that your school is focussing on. There is a tab for each of maths, reading, literacy and science.

We've been teaching number bonds for a few weeks now. It makes me nervous to spend so long on a single objective but I am noticing fringe benefits. Obviously, the children are all doing well with their number bonds but they are also using and embedding their understanding of + and = symbols which they now all use without thinking. Also, somewhat subconsciously, they know what addition is. Many children are starting to notice the commutativity of addition and share what they've realised in plenaries. As they have noticed it for themselves, they really get it, which is great. I'll be using the same resources to teach related subtraction facts shortly and I'm hoping all the solid work we've done on number bonds to date will give us a good springboard for subtraction and its relationship to addition. Perfect for practising segmenting for spelling using a tablet or PC with early writers! No printing is required - all you’ll need is a device that has PowerPoint, or access to Google Slides via the internet, a piece of paper and a pencil or pen. The digital worksheets begin with simple CVC (consonant sound, vowel sound, consonant sound) words such as pig, hat, etc. with the middle sound provided. Children sound out (segment) the word, using the image and given letter for support and then write the word on their piece of paper. Answers are provided on the penultimate slide so they can even mark their own work. Once they have mastered level 1, they can “unlock” the next level and so on, building up their segmenting for spelling skills progressively and systematically. I’ve used these digital worksheets with children 4 years old and upwards. Most children are able to use them independently once they’ve been shown what to do and the slide show is presented. They occasionally come out of the slide show by accident but show children how to press the slide show/present button and they can often handle that by themselves too - great for their computing skills! Planning and resources for the Year 3 and 4 English national curriculum based around Satoshi Kitamura’s story, Stone Age Boy. Eight literacy sessions are planned for children to plan, draft and write, evaluate and edit their own adventure story using the structure, vocabulary and grammar of the Stone Age Boy story as a ‘master’ example. The planning covers the following objectives from the English national curriculum: to identify themes in stories to participate in discussions about books, taking turns and listening to what others say to discuss and record ideas to organise paragraphs around a theme to use simple organisational devices to use vocabulary and grammar from a story when writing to assess the effectiveness of my own and others writing and suggest improvements. This resource is also available as part of a Stone Age bundle which also contains a DT textiles unit of work for the same topic, saving you 20% of the total cost.

Track errors, diagnose areas of development and organise groups and interventions to prepare your class for the Year 1 phonics screening check. This document contains a set of instructions, the diagnostic tool, a worked example for an individual pupil and whole class with a follow-up breakdown. This should help you complete the diagnostic tool and see how you can use the information it provides to plan your priorities for teaching whole class, small groups and/or 1:1 interventions. This really worked for me last year, I used it within my own class where I achieved a 90% pass rate for the screening check, and as year leader across Year 1 to inform the teachers of phonics sets, where we achieved an 84% pass rate collectively.

Have fun practising subitising with your class with this festive maths mastery game for the interactive whiteboard! Subitising is the ability to instantly count a small quantity without needing to count each individual item and plays an important part in early ‘number sense’, building solid foundations for later addition and subtraction. This PowerPoint resource contains 5 variations of the subitising game, including less Christmassy versions (snow foxes, gingerbread men and brussel sprouts). In the game, between 1 and 6 objects are displayed briefly on the screen and the children have to subitise (count instantaneously) how many objects they have seen. The images and the corresponding number are shown when you are ready by clicking the slide. I get my class to write their answer on an individual whiteboard before we check it on the big screen. The first 3 versions contain regular patterns of the numbers 1 - 6 (as you would see on a dice) for perceptual subitising and the final 2 versions contain irregular arrangements to support the development of conceptual subitising. Get your parent/carer volunteers organised and briefed with one easy kit. We found at our school that we weren't 'getting the most' out of our volunteers in school when it came to 1:1 reading so I put together a briefing presentation/handout for volunteers. Feedback from our volunteers was very positive as they felt more confident and that they were being more useful. The presentation also covers health and safety and confidentiality to set expectations from the outset. The kit includes: - initial letter to parents/carers - invitation to a volunteer briefing - the briefing presentation including health and safety, confidentiality, tips for supporting early readers and next steps for readers - a volunteer 1:1 reading record (one copy per pupil)

Themes include categories such as odd/even numbers, in the 5 times table/not in the 5 times table which hit multiple maths curriculum targets in one activity.
