This is a fun problem-solving activity for St. Valentine’s Day as an introduction to using glyphs in the shape of whole and half-shaped hearts to work out addition and subtraction sums. Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Content: - 12 Slide PowerPoint Presentation - 3 Addition Worksheets - 4 Subtraction Worksheets - Answer Sheets Start the lesson by asking students if they know what hieroglyphs and/or glyphs are and who used them and why they were used instead of the number system we use today. Slides 3-4 The presentation lesson begins by briefly explaining how the Aztecs and the Mayans used hieroglyphs/glyphs to represent numbers and then the class have a go at working out the numbers.
