An easy to follow lesson on Titanic. Students review pieces of evidence and categorise and organise this these into a diamond 9 (or score each piece of evidence) to determine who they think was to blame for the Titanic disaster. They follow this up with a report writing activity to explain their theory and also to offer suggestions on how future disasters might be avoided. A lesson that investigates the reasons why Chamberlain appeased Hitler. The lesson starts with an appeasement scenario game whereby students in small groups (2-3) must decide on the best course of action. Their decisions are scored. They then examine the reasons for Chamberlain's actions which link to the scenarios that they discussed during the starter game. After swapping data and discussions the students must decide if appeasement was the right course of action. They end by writing up their findings which is a good opportunity to develop GCSE skills (especially the 16 mark and 20 mark questions whereby students must be able to offer counter arguments and reach a supported conclusion). Writing frames are included for the less able which talks them through these skills.

Preparation for a 12 mark explain style question. Students work through a card sort and diamond 9 activity to assess the problems faced by the government before analysing some student responses to an exam question. The lesson concludes with the students completing a 12 mark exam question.

A lesson with a range of activities to develop the knowledge required for reforms to prisons in the 20th century (young offenders and purpose of changes to legislation). The resources includes information sheets, a range of activities, such as mind mapping and analysing the reasons for reforms to the prison system in the 20th century.

Students work through a card sort and a diamond 9 activity to determine the key factors in the German invasion of France. They write up their findings in a report template which develops their literacy skills by asking them to select the best evidence to support their findings. Challenge for the more able who create their own categories and suggest how France could avoid future invasions. As always there are clear instructions and high-quality differentiated resources.

This lesson teaches the skills required for the Narrative Question, paper 2. Students begin by looking at the mark scheme. In pairs they create a list of 3 top exam tips. They are then introduced to two Question 2 style exam questions. They work their way through a series of differentiated steps before writing up a response to one of the questions (the other can be set as a homework or as a starter for the next lesson). There are some sample responses that the students can mark and comment on (editable so that you can change depending on your groups ability range). Once they have done this there is opportunity for them to develop their answer before a bit of peer assessment. The lesson concludes with the students refining their exam tips set out in the starter activity. A structure strip and worksheet included. for the structure strip, I make the double-sided (cut out the literacy support and stick it to the back of the strip). The case study for the Edexcel History GCSE crime and punishment until. Lesson includes a worksheet and tasks which covers all of the required knowledge for the case study ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ and its implications for Catholics in the period 1500-1700 as set out in the specification.

Easy to follow lesson on the witch trials in Lancaster. Students use a card sort to try and solve various problems such as the long and short term causes of the executions, their main factor, establishing links and so on. After they have written up a response to this enquiry, the next activity looks at the decline in witchcraft and the reasons for this for example the enlightenment, the actions of Charles II. One of the activities requires use of a textbook (either Pearson or Hodder).

This lesson looks at the different ethnic/ political groups who moved to Whitechapel during the 19th century. Students extract information and add it to a matrix before determining which group they believe posed the greatest threat to the police in Whitechapel. A source based question supports the knowledge from this lesson and draws on content from the previous lesson re source skills and types of evidence. This lesson looks at a range of key events that impacted the population growth in Britain, 1750-1900. Students discuss key factors, select and priorities evidence before completing a teaching poster for 3 factors or events that affected population growth during the Industrial Revolution. The final lesson in our Norman Conquest unit of work. Students begin by recapping the changes/ events that took place after the Battle of Hastings e.g. construction of castles. They are then introduced to Aldred who, fearing Norman rule, fled Britain, but only to return some 20 years later. Students examine the changes that took place in this time and decide which changes were most significant before writing a letter to Alrded explaining what has happened since his departure and what to expect upon his return.
