An example informal letter from the point of view of Barney from the children’s novel Stig of the Dump by Clive King.
This exemplar informal letter is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying Chapter 4.
The model informal letter comes with a feature identification worksheet, plus answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class. The worksheets can be easily adjusted to match the ability of your class and provide differentiation.
After identifying the features, pupils can write their own informal letter from Barney or Lou’s point of view, based on the example text.

Teach pupils about the use of literary devices and figurative language in Alfred Noyes’ poem The Highwayman using these four activities with differentiation.

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat vocabulary cards and two presentations to support the teaching of all three verses of the poem The Owl and the Pussy-Cat by Edward Lear to EYFS or Key Stage 1 pupils. All selected 29 words/phrases from the poem contain matching images.
Vocabulary cards
The vocabulary cards can be used as a glossary, or cut out and used as a matching activity or as flashcards. These are particularly useful for pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) and pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to pre-teach the vocabulary before reading the poem, and again mid-unit.
The cards can also be used as a glossary for all pupils to refer to while studying the poem to aid understanding.
The cards can be printed onto A3 and displayed in the classroom as a visual reminder.
Vocabulary Presentation
The 59 slide presentation can be used to pre-teach the vocabulary, to test pupils or to prompt the class as they recite the lines to help pupils to memorize the poem.
Poem Presentation
A 31 slide presenation, with each line of the poem on a different slide. The key words/phrases have been blanked out and replaced with an image to represent that word/phrase. This presentation can be used to help pupils to recite the poem, the images acting as cues to aid recall.
Copy of the poem
A copy of all three verses of the poem is also included.

An example explanation text entitled ‘How Do Bees Make Honey?’ plus feature identification sheet, answer sheet, and causal conjunctions and adverbials list.
This fascinating exemplar explanation text describes the process of honey-making by honeybees. Pupils read the model text as a WAGOLL before analysing it and looking for features of explanation writing. The answers to the feature identification sheet are included for easy sharing in the classroom or online if remote learning.
Pupils can then use the example explanation text as a model for their own explanation writing.
This scientific text has cross-curricular links to the following units in the science curriculum:
✎ Year 3: Plants - explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal;
