This exemplar playscript is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying Chapter 6 of Stig of the Dump when Barney and Stig stop the thieves. The model playscript comes with a feature identification worksheet for children to complete, plus an answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class. After identifying the features, pupils can write their own playscript using an extract from the book (also included) by either re-writing the model text or continuing the script provided. Pupils match the character traits of Hogarth from The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes with evidence from the text and a definition of that character trait. The quotes from the text have been provided, alongside the definitions. This resource has been differentiated three ways: • Higher ability: 9 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Middle ability: 6 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Lower ability: 6 quotes have been provided, with the character traits and definitions combined. This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. Pupils must match up the two parts of sentences from the text that have been cut in two. Five sentence matching activities are provided, one for each chapter of The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes. After reading each chapter of the novel, in pairs, pupils match up the beginning of the sentence with the correct ending, reading them aloud to check that they sound complete. Benefits for this activity: • Encourages pupils to discuss how they know which parts to put together • Leads to pupils to spot patterns in sentence structure • Gives the opportunity for pupils to re-read sentences many times over • Helps pupils attune their ears to the sound of a sentence • Helps children recall the events of the story • Provides the opportunity for children to pay close attention to the grammar of sentences including tense • Helps pupils recognise sentences in their own writing in order to demarcate them using the correct punctuation All resources come as easily editable Word documents and as PDFs. Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences. There are two activities provided: ✽ Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. ✽ Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of colon usage; add missing colons to sentences and write sentences using colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. Different ways of using colons are demonstrated, including: • Using a colon to introduce a list • Using a colon to separate related main clauses where the second clause explains the first clause • Using a colon to emphasise a word or phrase Answers to all tasks are included.
