A KS1 history lesson which teaches children about the Great Fire of London and how it started. Within this lesson children will learn how the Great Fire started on Pudding Lane in Thomas Farriner’s bakery. This lesson will ask the children to act as historical detectives and work out the clues as to why they think the bakery was the cause of the fire. Children will link their prior knowledge of London, the fact it was overcrowded and buildings were made out of wood, to draw conclusions to the start of the fire. This resource is a powerpoint presentation and gives hints/clues as to why people believed that the fire started on Pudding Lane in a fun and engaging way. Alongside the powerpoint presentation is a differentiated worksheet which children have to complete to write down what caused the fire. A KS1 history lesson which teaches children about who Samuel Pepys was, his diary and why he is so important in recounting the Great Fire of London. Samuel Pepys’ diary is a key source for historians today in knowing what happened during the Great Fire of London. Pepys was able to describe the feel of London at that time and it is crucial that children learn about him. In this session we have taken extracts of Samuel’s diary for the teacher to read to the children for them to hear first hand what Samuel wrote. Prior to this it is clearly explained to the children what a diary is and why it is important that we have Samuel’s diary today.
