Mental Maths Tests Year 4

Mental Maths Tests Year 4

(1)
Ideal starter mental maths tests or quizzes. NO PREP! This pack contains 15 Mental Arithmetic PowerPoint Speed Tests, originally designed for Lower Key Stage 2(KS2) - Year 4 (Y4) and, if the concepts have been taught, Year 3 (Y3) - and other equivalents (in Scotland that’s Primary 5 and 4). They will also suit some lower ability students in Years 5 and 6 (Primary 6 and 7). UPDATE: PDF versions of all tests are included as well as the original PowerPoints. Money calculations are in UK pounds but additional dollar versions of all resources are also included. Students enjoy trying to beat their previous scores. These informal tests are split across 3 PowerPoints and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard, with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. In each test or quiz there’s one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered so as to minimise distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging calculations. Each test features 20 questions involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. Alternatively, use the PDF versions. At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, this time with the answer added clearly. Students can then mark their own or a partner’s work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but the idea of each answer appearing with its question like this is that it allows for important discussions about strategies used. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Multiplying and Dividing by 10, Fractions, Place Value, Money, Measure, Time and Angles. The PowerPoint files are editable should you wish to amend any wording or change the odd question to better suit your class. Differentiation: I have called this Set B rather than used any other identifier to help facilitate the use of my Set A (originally designed for Upper KS2) with children within the same class without children being aware of the age level of the questions. Click on this link to see the Set A version of this resource: Year 5 Year 6 Mental Maths PowerPoint Tests This Year 3 and Year 4 resource is available alongside other Mental Numeracy resources for the same stage in this great value bundle: Mental Maths Bundle Year 4 / Year 3 For engaging, time-saving printables and presentations to plan Primary Literacy, Maths and French lessons, visit FullShelf Resources

Sentence Building (Jumbled) KS1

(1)
This is a popular hands-on Year 1 making sentences word ordering resource. It’s a full class set of 30 different reusable simple sentence building activity boards and now also comes with an additional worksheet version of all boards. Originally designed for Year 1 (Y1) (or Primary 2 in Scotland), these sentence construction SPaG / Grammar activities could be used elsewhere in EYFS / Reception (Primary 1) and Key Stage 1, depending on ability. Emergent writers love lifting the words off the boards to sort and unscramble them to find the hidden sentence. With an engaging picture clue and title on each board, this word sequencing Literacy Basic Skills resource suits a range of learning styles. After carefully reading the jumbled words, your early writers correctly rearrange them on the board before writing the sentence out on the lines provided, using a dry-wipe pen. Regular practice with scrambled sentences should help children begin to form sentences independently. This is a 66 page PDF document in a Zip file, together with an additional editable Word document of the word cards only. Each mixed-up sentence contains a word beginning with a capital letter to help identify the first word and to reinforce this important punctuation rule, and a full stop to pick up and place at the end. While constructing these sentences, children also learn about word order, parts of speech and that a sentence must make sense on its own. These sentences contain 6-8 words. A simpler set featuring scrambled 4-5 word sentences is available, as is a muddled up questions version. SAVE by purchasing all 3 Sentence Ordering sets in a bundle. Jumbled Sentences (4-5 words) Jumbled Questions Jumbled Sentences BUNDLE Print in colour on quality card to make it sturdy and laminate for repeated use. It’s ideal for using as a regular activity, with children working on a different one each session. Or choose the ones you make up if working with a smaller group. It could be used with SEN / ASN groups or others requiring support with writing. Words are printed in faint grey on each sheet in a random order. Once laminated, cut the word strips and stick each word on top of this faint type, using Blu Tack, Blu Tack ‘Glu Dots’ or equivalent. Each strip is in a different colour to help identify the board it is from. Train the children to replace the words to these starting positions and to wipe boards before putting them back. Good quality laminating pouches and easy-wipe pens will help with this! Pleae visit FullShelf Resources

The other difference is the use of ‘bruns’ instead of ‘marron’ to describe brown eyes in the Canadian version as this is more common. Most text in the PowerPoints is editable anyway, if you wish to make changes to suit your students. Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear on a click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. The final 3 slides of the PowerPoint (an interactive hexagons game) is not compatible with PDF and is omitted from that version. Thank you for your interest.

Robert Burns Reading Comprehension

(0)
25th January is Burns Night when people all over the world with Scottish connections attend a Burns Supper. Celebrate the life and poems of Scotland’s national Bard this January - or at any other time of the year - with these differentiated non-fiction / informational text reading passages with comprehension questions, a cloze procedure task, discussion writing prompt card and a crossword puzzle. They were designed for upper Primary (Upper KS2 - Years 5 and 6 and equivalents) or early Secondary (KS3 - Year 7). These close reading tasks and other activities are in an 18-page PDF. A US version with minor spelling changes is also included in the Zip file.   Also available in this January Reading Comprehensions BUNDLE.   Please check the preview to assess suitability. The non fiction comprehension and cloze task are provided at two levels of challenge, therefore they will suit a range of year groups and provide appropriate levels of challenge for different abilities within many classes.   Famous Scottish poet Robert Burns (often known as Rabbie Burns) was born on January 25 1759 and became one of the world’s best known writers. On Burns Night, his life and achievements are celebrated in Scotland and all over the world, especially in countries where many Scots have emigrated, such as Canada.   I am designing these non-fiction comprehension and activities packs to provide a time-saving bank of flexible themed tasks linked to dates throughout the year, though of course you can use them whenever you want. They feature very short texts (about 250 - 300 words). Each provides comprehension questions, a cloze procedure task and other linked tasks. The other tasks are on aspects of spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, writing or reading (this varies across the different packs). Build all activities into your Literacy / English programme, or use for cover lessons, homework, early finisher tasks or for those busy times when you need something low-prep, meaningful, relevant and engaging at the last minute!   CONTENTS: Reading passage (2 levels of difficulty) Cloze procedure task (2 levels) – using same passage Comprehension questions (2 levels) – using same passage Discussion writing prompt card (with and without background color) - this will help students to write a balanced argument about whether Burns is the greatest Scot ever. Students could carry out research to expand on the arguments and explore further points, if you want them to write a more detailed piece. Burns Supper crossword puzzle (research task) - the text provides some answers but this will require internet access to search for most answers (unless they have done a Burns study) Full answer keys Teacher notes YOU MIGHT LIKE: Scotland Crossword

Place Value Worksheets KS2

(0)
Fun Key Stage 2 place value puzzles challenges, great for early finishers activities, starter tasks, revision and homework, originally designed for Year 4, 5 and 6 (Y4, Y5 and Y6) Maths / Numeracy. There are 2 fun crossnumber puzzles for revision of numbers up to 5 digits / ten thousands, 2 puzzles for numbers up to 6 digits / one hundred thousands, and 2 puzzles for numbers up to 7 digits / millions. For each of 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers the first puzzle is for practising reading the word version and writing the digit version in the grid, while the second, more challenging puzzle for each involves adding and subtracting from large numbers (increase by 1000, take away five hundred thousand etc). These more challenging place value mental maths puzzles use a mixture of words and digits for the given calculations, with pupils entering digits in the grid as before. This PDF file contains the 6 puzzles and full solutions. In Scotland, this suits Second Level Maths, Primary 5, 6 and 7. These Numeracy puzzles are an engaging alternative to standard worksheets and should help pupils consolidate their understanding of place value in a fun way. This pack also provides good differentiation and revision opportunities and could be used across different age groups / classes. You can get these puzzles alongside my other Place Value activities and games (large differentiated sets of self-check Place Value trails for 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers and also decimals Place Value games) in this good value bundle: KS2 Place Value Activities Bundle You might be interested in my popular bundle of Hidden Word Puzzles for Rounding, Multiplication, Fractions and Negative Numbers: Maths Puzzles Some of my other popular KS2 Maths resources: Mental Maths Bundle Multiplication / Division Bundle Angles / Symmetry Bundle For time-saving, engaging printables and presentations to plan Primary Literacy, Maths and French lessons, visit FullShelf Resources

Money Change £1

Money Games (Change for One Pound): differentiated, illustrated four-in-a-row game boards, each featuring 36 prices in UK currency (sterling) for calculating change from a pound, plus a 20-card loop card / dominoes set. Printable games for starters, early finishers activities, revision etc. FOUR IN A ROW A fun, strategic activity for consolidating this key money / financial / shopping skill. Ideal for maths lessons or Money Week skills practice. Originally designed for Key Stage 1 (KS1) Year 2 (Y2) and Lower KS2 Year 3 or 4 (Y3 / Y4), or for older students requiring consolidation. In Scotland, use for First Level Maths, Primary 3 or 4 or early Second Level. Includes: 2 PDF files 2 standard boards (featuring different items and prices from each other) 2 lower ability boards (same as above but less challenging calculations) Answer grids for at-a-glance checking by pupils or teacher Teacher notes Laminate and use again and again. Children work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get 4 correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. It works especially well if they roll a dice to find which column they must pick a calculation from (columns numbered 1-6). If there are no questions left in a column, skip a go or roll again. Imagining that they pay for each item with £1, pupils use a different coloured whiteboard pen to record on the board the change due for each of their transactions or add an initial or symbol if both teams are using the same colour. I recommend printing in A3 but A4 is okay too. The LA versions have a star next to the title. Print on different coloured card or paper if required. LOOP GAME / FOLLOW ME CARDS / DOMINOES A 20-card set that can start with any card. A child reads the ‘I spend’ part first as they make their ‘purchase’ with others working out if they have the relevant ‘I give you’. Use for groups or as a whole class starter or plenary (in pairs if necessary). LA pupils could be given less challenging cards so they can still experience success. I hope these money games save you time. Complex Sentences Improving Writing KS2

(0)
Super Sentences is a fun creative writing VCOP activity or SPaG game (spelling, punctuation and grammar), ideal for Key Stage 2 (KS2) and early KS3, Year 5, 6 and 7 (Y5, Y6 and Y7) which promotes ambitious vocabulary and variety in sentence structures. Improve sentences by using it again and again! PDF format. 40 printable sentence-formation cards Colour and black and white versions Great as a regular morning starter, early finisher task or warm up for writing. An introductory card models ways to add interest and variety to sentences. Encourages building complex and compound sentences, using subordinate clauses etc. Let students write as silly a sentence as they want and relish playing with words to banish boring sentences!   Also available is Sensational Sentences, featuring even more ambitious vocabulary for older or more able students. SAVE BY GETTING BOTH PACKS IN: Complex Sentences Cards BUNDLE MORE BUNDLE OPTIONS FOR THIS RESOURCE: Improving Sentences BUNDLE Literacy and Maths Time Fillers Year 5 / 6   MORE INFO: Designed as a dice game, it can be used in other ways. As individuals, in pairs or in groups, students roll to find out which 3 words they must incorporate into a sentence (Instructions are on the cards). There are 6 groups of words on each card – openers/connectives, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and two groups of nouns. Students place the selected words anywhere in their sentence, as long as it makes sense, recording the sentence on paper or a mini whiteboard. You may wish to allow flexibility (changing verb tense, using the verb as an adjective etc.) To cater for different situations and abilities, change the number of words they roll for, have students team up with a partner or select any words they want from the card. I encourage dictionary use for unfamiliar words and urge students to keep sentences they are especially proud of for use in longer pieces of writing. The activity might spark a whole story! Print on card or paper and laminate for repeated use. With a smaller group, choose the ones you print and/or laminate cards back to back. Alternatively, display cards on the screen for whole class use.   YOU MIGHT LIKE… Editing SPaG Puzzles Worksheets Creative Writing Prompt Cards First and Third Person Lesson

Money Games Calculating Change BUNDLE

4 Resources
Practise the key skill of finding change for different amounts! Key Stage 2 (KS2) Money Change Games and Activities BUNDLE for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 (Y3 / Y4 / Y5 / Y6), depending on ability: 16 fun, differentiated, illustrated four-in-a-row Maths game boards (each featuring 36 prices in UK currency) for calculating change from £1, £5, £10 and £20, plus a loop card / dominoes set for each of the above amounts. Ideal for starter activities and early finishers activities in Maths lessons or for practice in Money Weeks. All in PDF format. In Scotland, use for Primary 4, 5, 6 and 7.   FOUR IN A ROW A fun, strategic activity for consolidating this key money / shopping skill. A total of 16 boards. All four packs (One pound, five pounds, ten pounds, twenty pounds) include: 2 standard game boards (featuring different items and prices from each other) 2 lower ability game boards (same boards as above but with mostly less challenging calculations) Answer grids for all 4 boards for at-a-glance checking by pupils or teacher   Intended to be laminated and used again and again. Children can work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. It works especially well if they roll a dice each time to find which column they have to pick a calculation from (columns numbered 1-6). If there are no questions left in a particular column, they could skip a go or roll again. Pupils use a different coloured whiteboard pen to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if both players / teams are using the same colour. I recommend printing in A3 but it works fine in A4. The LA versions have a star next to the title but could perhaps be printed on different coloured card or paper if required.   LOOP GAME / FOLLOW ME CARDS / DOMINOES Four 20-card sets (£1, £5, £10, £20) that can start with any card. A child reads the ‘I spend’ part first with others working out whether they have the relevant ‘I give you’. Use as a game for groups or perhaps as a whole class / whole group starter or plenary (in pairs if necessary). LA pupils could be given less challenging cards so they can still experience success. I hope these Numeracy resources save you time and work well in your class. I would be very grateful for a review if you get a moment. Fun revision activities for converting between different units of measure: 6 Hidden Word / Spot the Mistake Puzzles Worksheets (and solutions) for Upper KS2 Maths / Numeracy (especially Year 5 and 6 - Y5 / Y6) and early KS3 (and equivalents). Conversion of metric units only: millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, millilitres, litres, grams and kilograms. All puzzles are in PDF format. Early finishers love being challenged by them plus they make great collaborative starters too! Includes a puzzle for each of the list below: Converting Length (one-star, less challenging version) Converting Length (two-star, more challenging) Converting Volume / Capacity Converting Weight (Mass) Ordering Measurements Converting Measurements for Mental Addition and Subtraction calculations An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these no-prep measurement puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher, revision or homework activities. They can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. They are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after converting, ordering, adding or subtracting the measurement. Each puzzle contains a grid. Pupils circle any boxes containing errors, then put together the letters from these boxes to reveal a maths word. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their own work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. The range of puzzles in this resource is ideal for differentiation and / or to cater for a range of groups and classes across Key Stage 2 (KS2) and some early KS3. Hopefully they'll be helpful for your teaching over many years. I hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. I would be grateful for a review if you get a spare moment. Enough for more than one lesson! My French basics / beginners resources are designed for Year 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 but might suit others, depending on experience. Angles Game Year 5 / 6

(2)
Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 5 / 6 printable activity for classifying angles (identifying angle types), turns, 8-point compass, missing angles etc. A game board and 80 question cards (differentiated at two levels) to add variety and fun to angles work in Upper Primary Y5 and Y6 (or Second Level Primary 6 and 7 in Scotland). It could suit other ages for differentiation and revision. It mixes up different aspects of the topic in a fun self-checking learner-directed activity, allowing the teacher to work with other groups. There are additional challenges for the children to complete as they move around the board. All in a 15-page PDF file. Differentiation: There’s a more challenging Green version, while the Blue one is for younger or less able learners. A different set of question cards is provided for each game. In the Green version, questions 1-20 focus on identifying angle types / names (acute, right, straight, obtuse, reflex) and 21-40 involve turns and the 8-point compass. Questions 40-50 deal with working out missing angle sizes on a straight line, vertically opposite angles, angles around a point etc. It should be simple for you to weed out any questions that have not yet been covered. In the Blue version, questions 1-20 focus on less challenging questions about identifying angles and 21-30 bring in turns and the 8-point compass. I used different coloured card for additional sets so they didn’t get muddled, and laminated them. I recommend blowing up game boards to A3 for use with bigger groups.
