The Tragic Love Story of Bosnia’s Romeo and Juliet Reading Comprehension

(0)
In this activity bundle, students will explore the tragic love story of Bosko and Admira, a young couple from Sarajevo, Bosnia, who were killed during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. The story of Bosko and Admira has been compared to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as their love was tragically cut short by the violence and conflict of war. The bundle includes a 6-page reading comprehension activity titled “A Modern Day Romeo and Juliet: The Tragic Love Story of Bosko and Admira,” accompanied by original photos. The text covers the background of the Bosnian war, the story of Bosko and Admira’s relationship, and the events leading up to their untimely deaths. The reading comprehension questions, included on a separate 5-page worksheet, are designed to test students’ understanding of the text and promote critical thinking skills. The worksheet also features a CLOZE reading activity, which challenges students to fill in the missing words in key passages from the text. In addition to the reading comprehension activity, the bundle includes a Venn diagram activity, which encourages students to make connections between the story of Bosko and Admira and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The Venn diagram is perfect for English teachers who want to explore themes of love, conflict, and tragedy across different literary works. I also added a word document with ideas for connecting the story of Bosko and Admira with Romeo and Juliet in the classroom. The bundle also includes a song analysis activity, which invites students to analyze a song written by a Bosnian band about Bosko and Admira. This activity bundle is a powerful way to engage students in discussions about war, conflict, love, and tragedy, and is perfect for teachers looking to explore these themes across different subjects and contexts. Wartime Historical Romances - Station Activity

(0)
Looking for an engaging no-prep station activity? This is one of my favorites! This resource contains five Real-Life Historical War Love Stories (from the 20th century and one story about the Ukrainian couple living and surviving in Kyiev today). Analyzing the stories of how the couples met, students at the same time learn about historical events (wars or battles) that directly affected their relationship and changed their lives forever. Each life story comes with a special short information sheet about the historical battle or war in which the couples participated, so that students can better understand the historical context of the time in which the couples lived. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of these historical topics. The main idea is to encourage them, through reading interesting love stories, to think about how wars change the lives of people around the world. Best of all, there is no prep work! All you have to do is print the stories, hang the information sheets around the class, split the students into groups, assign the two worksheets per group and have students rotate to each station and complete tasks. I promise they will love this activity. Don’t like station work? Don’t worry - you can easily have students work individually, in pairs, as a class, or assign as homework! A key is included!
