3.5.2 Analysing financial performance
3.5.4 Making financial decisions: improving cash flow and profits
This set of resources includes 5x PPTs which can be delivered over 9 lessons (around 200 slides of engaging and interactive learning) and 20x word files consisting of calculation, exam practice, games and answer sheets.
Learners are introduced to revenue and costs first, as this is the foundation for the rest of the unit. We then look at budgets, cash flow forecasts, break even and finally profitability. Lots of calculation activities with answers as well as exam questions. We also look at how to improve cash flow and profitability, which comes under 3.5.4, however this bundle has both 3.5.2 and 3.5.4 due the close link.

This lesson introduces learners to patterns of trade and how trade has changed over time in the UK and other countries such as China. We look at factors that influence patterns of trade with real life examples based on video case studies i.e how China’s pattern of trade has changed as they have become the largest exporter in the world through manufacturing, similarly how UKs pattern of trade has changed into services etc. We look at the breakdown of imports and exports for the UK with great visuals. This double lesson introduces learners to the two types of poverty in Economics. We start by finding out what poverty means to students before into the details of absolute and relative poverty. We look at some engaging and informative facts/videos on poverty to a get a better undetstanding of poverty in the world and in the UK over time. We then go on to discuss the causes of changes in poverty. Some true or false questions and a debate task to consolidate learning and a research task to further contextualise understanding of this interesting topic. This double lesson introduces learners to factors which influence the growth and development of a country. There are quite a few factors on the specification so this could be delivered as a student-led task to research two factors per pair. We then feedback what students have found out but also go through each factor on the board to fill in any gaps in knowledge or clear misconceptions. This ought to help go through the spec requirements quicker and more effectively.
We also look at non-economic factors such as corruption, war and disease. Some true or false questions, video case studies to contextualise the topic, a debate question and a box plenary to finish with.

This double lesson builds on learners understanding of market failure from year 12, but now we focus on failure in the financial sector. A very interestesting topic due to the application of the financial crisis. We start by recapping what market failure is and how banks fail. We then look at the 2008 financial crisis to understand what happened. Examples of different market failures are given, video case studies to help students contextualise. A 15 mark question on whether banks should be bailed out, indicative points and a peer assessment grid is included for students to use. A research task, some true or false questions to consolidate, a debate, box plenary and kahoot to finish with. A link to a documentary for homework too.

In the first lesson, we start by looking at what culture means in business and what a organisations culture is made up of, how it is formmed. We then look at a number of real life examples of strong and weak cultures. We then look at Handy’s four cultures and Hofstede’s national cultures models. Influences on culture as these differ in businesses, finally we look at the challenges of changing culture as this is deeply embedded and always visible in business.
In the second lesson, we recap with some true or false questions before reading a case study, an exam question evaluating culture in a business, concise model answer and peer assessment grid for students to identify WWW and EBI before responding with an improvement.
