“Trotting Home” is a fun piece for classroom percussion and recorded accompaniment. There is a main xylophone part which is interesting but, at the same time, not too difficult to learn as it relies on patterns and repetition. It also includes an element of syncopation. Simple lyrics are suggested to help with the learning of this part, but you and your class may well be able to come up with your own words and make it into a full-blown vocal and instrumental piece. There is an optional second part for xylophone, glockenspiel, recorder or any other instrument. This comes in the second verse. There is also a chance for someone (or two or more) to be the horse’s hooves by using coconut shells or a two-tone wood block. The resource includes the following materials:- A full recording of the whole piece. Recordings of the accompaniment both with and without the horse’s hooves. A recording of the accompaniment with the second part included in case you do not have anyone to play it. Copies, in PDF format, of the xylophone parts and of the melody with suggested lyrics and also some teaching notes and suggestions.
