They’re also great for multi-skill language learning, giving students structured talk opportunities and encouraging them to listen, read and write. They’re ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work. The reference book includes all the questions and answers written out in Spanish. It’s an essential learning support resources for my students, who use it as a general writing frame to guide and inform their own creative writing. It’s really useful for mini-translation, whole-group pronunciation and reading-out loud practice too. We use the notes and next steps template to reflect on learning, what we might reasonably do to progress learning, and to inform and support whole-group discussion about learning in general. The question and answer writing card templates give students a great opportunity to apply Spanish practically and creatively, as they put together both questions and answers for each other. This is a great team activity too, and really popular with my students. The cards are really versatile, and work well in lots of different learning contexts, such as***independent learning time, home learning, revision and exam prep, and cover lessons***. GCSE FRENCH KS3 FRENCH KS4 FRENCH SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE 25 high-frequency verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys, verb lists This ten-page workbook is really popular with my students - they like to work independently, practicing and revising how to conjugate French verbs, and it’s a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, but I’ve found that when my students are able to provide the correct conjugation very quickly, and out of a specific context, they feel really confident that their conjugation skills are developing well. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are fixed conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognize and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written French is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. The resource has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 SPANISH VEGETABLES BINGO GAMES 100 DIFFERENTIATED BINGO GRIDS AND 40 CALLING CARDS Bingo games are perfect for language learning, and they’re really easy to differentiate. All my students, regardless of age, find playing the games a great way of consolidating their Spanish vocabulary, and developing their Spanish language skills in general - bingo is absolutely perfect for speaking, listening, reading, writing and spelling. This set includes 100 differentiated bingo grids and 40 calling cards - 20 in Spanish, and 20 in English - I always play with English calling cards too, as I’ve found it’s a really great way of further consolidating vocabulary - students have to focus carefully on the language ‘switch’, and translate what they hear really quickly. It’s definitely useful to have calling cards, so that you can keep track of what you’re calling out, and it also lets students be the bingo caller too, meaning they can play entirely independently of the teacher. There are twelve Spanish vegetables in masculine, feminine, singular & plural in this set: the mushrooms the cauliflower thee carrots the lettuce the cucumber the tomato the cabbage the potatoes the garlic the broccoli the peas the onions I differentiate my bingo games by using picture-only cards, which are great for general vocabulary consolidation and recall, and listening skills. There are 40 9-square grids in total, and there’s a set of color (which I sometimes laminate so that I can just get them out whenever I need to - make sure students have wipe-clean pens on their tables!). I’ve also included the same grids in black and white - simply print these out. I sometimes give out pages with four grids on, and let students choose which order they play the grids in - they have multiple pages - or sometimes, I get the students to cut out the grids, place them in a small bowl or similar on tables and they then randomly choose grids - depending on the size of your class, you will definitely have several winners per game. The grids are designed for all the squares to be crossed off in order to win the game. I also use word-only grids to help students focus more on their reading skills, so I’ve included 40 Spanish word-only 9-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). There are 20 mixed word and picture grids are ideal for additional challenge and differentiation. KS3 GERMAN GCSE VERBS ACTIVITIES German Common Verbs Ich habe… Wer hat… ? This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, ideal for practising, reinforcing and consolidating 99 high-frequency German verbs. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Active learning is a really successful way of developing both language skills and general confidence. The verbs are in the infinitive form, and the aim of the game is to create a German verb chain as quickly as possible. There are two games, each with a slightly different challenge: Challenge 1: verbs are in alphabetical order, with the question and answer format: Ich habe… Wer hat… ? Challenge 2: verbs are in random order, with the question and answer format: Hast du… Ja/Nein, ich habe… In both challenges, the English translation of the verb appears immediately below the German verbs, which maximizes opportunity for really embedding vocab. The game works just as well if the cards are placed on a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my KS3 German learners, who are ready to move into KS4 German, but I’ve also played the game with my more advanced learners, who really enjoy ’going back to the start’ and having the opportunity to get up, walk about and talk - the games definitely provide some essential variety in learning activities. I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. I always do some high-speed verb quiz oral warm-up and warm-down activities to really get the most out of the game, for example Wie sagt man SEIN auf Deutsch? or Richtig oder falsch - SEIN heißt TO BE auf Englisch? These French numbers display posters / flashcards create an instant introduction to Numbers 0-31 in French, also giving the learning environment fabulous French look and feel. I’ve found that having new and high-frequency language displays also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of French learners. The posters help students familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The font is big enough for students to read in various locations in the classroom - I find this really important so that we can get the most out of any particular display - for example we use them for spelling and mental calculation games at certain points in the lesson. It doesn’t matter if you’re not focusing on numbers at any particular time - classroom display provides learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or black wave, so 64 posters in all. Laminate or print on card stock - I always do this with my flashcards and displays - they hang a lot better, and I recycle them for many years. I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example with the perfect tense, students need to have a good grasp of the relevant auxiliary in the present tense - there are verbs that require either haben or sein, so the focus on the auxiliary sein with this workbook helps to embed this concept, and to get used to ensuring that the past participle is situated at the end of the clause or sentence. Forming the past participle of a whole range of verb groups follows a certain pattern, which students are able to identify and predict the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations will certainly help to embed that successfully. Parole Intrecciate are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features 10 differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. There are 5 Italian to Italian grids, where learners are prompted with Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Italian grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Italian equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Italian, they also complete the Italian word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Answer keys also provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters help students develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Africa and its geography. GCSE LATIN KS4 LATIN KS3 LATIN VERBS I give my language learners of all grades and learning phases a whole series of vocabulary reference lists, that build up into a really comprehensive reference bank over the course of their Latin language learning programme. They’re really popular with my students, as they know they can just go to their reference file or folder, and find what they need. They tell me that they feel far more confident about their Latin when they have a good grasp of core vocabulary. They’re great for quick vocabulary quizzes too - simply shout out either a Latin or an English verb, and students respond with the corresponding verb. There are two alphabetical lists - one Latin-English, and one English-Latin, as I’ve found that language learners prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - colour block (which I tend to use as part of a grammar display), and black wave - students tell me that this makes vocabulary lists more visually appealing, which is really useful when they’ve got a lot of vocabulary to work through and learn, and can be a real motivator for learning. If my group is small, I provide students with a set of double-sided and laminated reference resources. My students all have a reference file or folder, again from the beginning of their learning, and part of helping them develop independence in, and responsibility for, their learning, is to give them opportunity to keep their learning resources in good order, and easily accessible. This list is a collection of 25 high-frequency Latin verbs that I work with in the beginning to intermediate stages of Latin learning programmes. They include regular and irregular verbs, with some modal verbs. The verbs are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency Latin verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in English - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. We also use our reference lists to help students audit their developing ***Latin ***verb vocabulary. PRIMARY LATIN CLUB LATIN FOR CHILDREN LATIN FRUITS & VEGETABLES WORD & PICTURE LIST Ten fruits and ten vegetables in Latin, with both words and pictures - I like to give these to my young beginner learners of Latin, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Latin vocabulary books, or file them in their Latin vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Latin vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a***broader range of words and genders***, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits and vegetables show the gender of each noun, using (m), (f), (n) and (f.pl) to denote masculine, feminine, neuter and feminine plural respectively. This is really useful for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Latin, specifically gender of Latin nouns, how they change in the plural form, and the absence of article. GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN KS3 GERMAN IDIOMS German Speaking Practice Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom Das ist nicht mein Bier - That is not my beer! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real German ambiance, promoting the everyday use of German. There are two backgrounds - the German flag looks great, but definitely uses a lot of ink, so you may prefer the poster without a background - this looks just as good!
